At 175k, I'd give it very serious thought. There is literally no better time with everything off to do the oil pan gasket. Think of it this way, when the OPG is done and everything is back together, assuming quality work, it won't need to be opened up for that again until well into the 200k miles range. Obviously, it's s job that needs the know how and a way to properly torque rods bolts, but it's also very much a wash, rinse and repeat process.

If you're mechanically inclined enough to DIY the oil pan gasket, you can definitely handle the rod bearings. It'll add 2 to 3 hours of work, and years of peace of mind. Just make sure you get a good angle torque wrench (best I could find was one from harbor freight for a little less than $200). You could also opt for a angle meter, you can grab one of those on Amazon for less than $20, but they're a pain in the ass to use while you're laying upside down, car on jackstands. I started with this device, and after doing one bearing, I had enough and made the trip to harbor freight.

That's what I'm thinking, this is the time. What are the recommended bearings and cap bolts these days?

I went with stock rod bolts and torque sequence + King std bearings. Be sure to double check and make sure that King shipped you the std size. There are threads where people almost installed the wrong size bearings by accident.

I would love to hear what others used.

I was on a fence about touching rod bearings while doing the oil pan(and turbos at 112K miles) but after this thread I'm researching which bearings and torque wrench to get

Problem is this "oil pan" job keeps getting bigger and bigger

Bearing PM

Change oil regularly and more often if tuned.
Keep oil level high.
Wait for oil to reach temp before high rpm or boost.

Keep it simple.

PM doesn't help the others here. It is a forum after all.

I bought a used N54 with 19k miles and did King rod bearings before throwing the engine in. Been running great with big power for 34k additional miles. All other internals are stock.
