I messed up a new injector. Help!

Hey guys,

I have a leaking injector on cylinder 2 and am in the process of replacing an injector for the first time.

Old one came out no problem with my $3 DIY slide hammer but when I removed the protective cap from the new injector, I evidently squeezed way too hard with the pliers and scratched the heck out of the new one. I was nervous so I cleaned it up as best I could to ensure no shavings were present and installed it before the Teflon seal expanded but I have not completed the job as I wanted to see if I ruined it and need to buy another or if it’ll be okay.

In my nervousness I didn’t get a picture of the damage but I got a pic of the old one below with little arrows showing where I damaged it. The actual bottom part where it sprays was untouched.

What do you all think?

Depends how deep the groove is. If you took a huge chunk out of it where you pulled metal off of it then it might. If it's scratches then it shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you for the input! It's pretty deep but not like there's a hole in it or anything. It looks more like buggered aluminum honestly though I'm pretty sure the injectors are steel. I was really surprised how deep and gnarly it gashed into the injector from a slight amount of force on the little metal cap. It really looks like I was cranking hard on it which I didn't think I was lol

Anyone else ever done this? I'm scared to start it in case there's any fine metal particulate lingering on or around the new injector. I'd much rather shell out for another injector than risk damaging my piston/cylinder wall if it could cause harm

Welp the car barely runs now and the only code is cyl 2 misfire. I clear it and it comes right back, so looks like I ruined a brand new $500 injector. FML.

Worst part is this is literally the ONE time I didn't buy from FCP. Tischer had it on sale. FML haha ordering another one from FCP now.

Def post pics when you yank it out. I'm curious why it's failing if the scratches were so far from the point of fuel-exit.

Interesting, You would think that if you didn't damage the spray area, and it has no effect on how it seals, it'll be fine. Didn't forget to code?

Pulled it out this morning but it's still at my parents' house. I'll get pics. It really doesn't even look as bad as I remembered, but I can't get it to even fire, I think. Might try turning the fuel rail line around and sticking it to the side to see if/how it sprays. Super mad about the whole thing haha. The old injector still works totally fine and the car runs great, it just has a wet plug 2 and smells strongly of fuel. Some cold starts if you give it a little rev it'll shoot a little fuel out the exhaust. You'd never know while driving it, it even cold starts and idles smooth though a few cold starts were choppy for a second.

Not sure I can help you out or not, but if you want me to test flow and clean that injector for you, or any other injectors, let me know. I've been servicing N54 and other injectors for a while now. I can install new seals and decouplers if you need also.

Hey, I might take you up on that! If I were to send both in, what would you charge?

I can do a full set of 6 N54 injectors for $100...that includes testing for leaks and strange spray patterns, flow testing, cleaning, and thermal images. I include all of the reports with the injectors when I send them back to you. I can also install new seals and decouplers if that's something you are interested in.

Just did three more sets over the weekend.

Shoot me a PM if I can help.

Well guys, I ordered some new decouplers and seals and decided to go at it again today to see what's going on.

I'm not sure exactly which part did it, but I reinstalled the new injector with a new seal and decoupler, reset all codes AND adaptations before starting the car and also replaced all 6 plugs and she's running like a champ.

My best guess is that the car wouldn't let the cylinder come online due to all the fuel it got flooded with during the process OR the adaptations were so out of whack from the leaky one it just didn't know what to do.

Also changed the oil and it STANK of fuel. Ran the car for about 2 hours today and all 6 new plugs look perfect. Very happy!

Here's a pic of the scratches for anyone interested. Some actually seemed to be aluminum from the cap that transferred onto the injector. Once I cleaned that up a little better it's really not scratched deeply.

Feel like that should still work. I'd consider shipping it to iqraceworks and his new fancy testing hardware.

I was about to but decided to retry now that I had some new seals and decouplers. Redid it, not rushed, and reset adaptations and the car runs perfect now.

I don't think the damage to the injector was the issue but either an adaptation issue or my install was.

All good now!

Yep...and now I have an accurate and reliable way to run the injectors up to 2500+psi to test them for leaks
