New 07 E90 335i Owner - 02/2007 Production - No Oil Cooler w/ oil leaks
Hey Everyone,
First post here on the E90Post as I just purchased my first ever BMW last week . I bought an automatic 2007 E90 335i with 72K miles. The car has the Sport and Premium package. Since my purchase, I've been doing quite a bit of research on the vehicle as well as the recommended maintenance I should be looking into at these miles. (I will be buying a transmission oil change kit soon and servicing the transmission myself) As with every used car I buy, I took it straight to the local BMW dealership to have them do a oil change, as well as an inspection. When it was done they informed me that it appears I have a small oil leak coming from both the valve cover gasket and possibly the oil filter housing gasket too. I did some searching on YouTube and located some great videos showing the step by step process of both of those repairs, so I believe I will be getting to that in the next few weeks. The main purpose of my post is the part about not having an oil cooler. Come to find out, apparently at the beginning of the production in 2007, BMW forgot to add the oil cooler to cars being produced with the Sport package. With my car being produced in 02/2007, it appears it was apart of the "lucky" ones with the sport package that did not get the oil cooler . After some searching, I found some people mentioning that BMW may have permitted that some of those vehicles have an oil cooler retrofitted after the fact. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or luck with this issue? I am contacting both my local dealership and BMW on Monday to see if they would still be willing to perform the retrofit. Any and every bit of help/advice is greatly appreciated! Last edited by mjack; 08-01-2015 at 04:36 PM.. |

Yes. BMW retrofitted my car back in 2007 and it was a 9/2006 build. I went to the dealership and had them print off my options list for my car. I then pushed back on BMW based on the build codes of my car and noting the oil cooler was not installed as required. However, I do not know if they will do this now. Good luck.

I have a 09/06 production car.
Look up how much of an oil temp difference will a oil cooler make. Might want to put that into your calculation if you have to pay for it yourself. Unless you track heavy, I decided not to.... And leave it. Look how long the car has survived without it. DN |

Anyone have any experience using products like Purple Ice from Royal Purple? Not sure if this would be ok to run in the 335i. http://www.amazon.com/Royal-Purple-S...ct_top?ie=UTF8

My current oil is Mobile 1, 0-40.
Temp outside in was really hot yesterday like 33 celcius. In city my car was at 2nd line past mid point. 210 mid point. Was on the hwy doing 75 to 90 for about 45 min drive. My oil temp looked like yours. 245ish. What oil are you using? DN |

My car never has been that bad. If it gets bad the car goes into limp mode any ways. If it does that is when I would look into it. BTW i get 98k miles on it.

Yeah, so far I have not got any symptom of limp mode. Today I threw some Purple Ice into the cooling system, we'll see if it makes any difference.

stock thermostat doesn't even open until 240 iirc, so no worries unless you're consistently hitting >300
and congrats on the new ride! |

Your temps run about 40 degrees higher than mine. BTW, I run redline oil. Cheers!

Car operates at around 240-250. You are fine. If you do an oil cooler, go aftermarket. You only need it if you track though.
