Sounds like he didn't see it and simply drove head on into it, one wheel then the next. Aluminum wheels are just NOT that strong, and the RFT's make it much worse. My question is; why did he drive off the road? I think I made out that someone was coming into his lane? I'd still use my insurance. It surprises me how often people won't use their insurance worrying about premiums, and will go ahead and spend thousands on the repairs. Even if your premium were to go up, only the portion on which you make the claim will go up, not the all of the insurance parts will. And, if you're only making 1 claim every 3 years, if that, you premium probably won't go up at all, as it's based on how much money they have to pay out. If you want OEM wheels, they are expensive and worth the cost of the deductible. If you go aftermarket, you can get better and lower cost options, but now he has to get 4 new wheels, which will cost too. |

Wow... sorry to hear about the damaged wheel. From the looks of the wheel and pothole picture, the rear lip (weakest part of a wheel) took most if not all of the force. Didn't see the front face of the wheel so I can't be sure. Whats surprising is that the separation is close to the spokes, the area where the barrel thickness starts to thin out.
If its just the back of (both) wheels impacting the pothole, you might have hit that pothole at the "perfect" angle, where the impact force pretty much exceeds what a wheel is designed to withstand. Of course this leads to the argument of whether separation should occur at any time... Well, that debate can probably occur after one examines the separation point to see if there are problems with the raw material. Glad that you already have a replacement sorted out... if its two wheels and two tires it might not be worth it going thru insurance... the deductible and the annual increase (due to at-fault claim) might cost way more than how much two used wheels (on the for sale forums) might cost. If the braking system is also compromised that might be a different story. |

Read the whole thread.
My first post: "Plus, if you're running runcraps, those sidewalls are so freaking stiff that the energy just transfers straight through to the rim, instead of being absorbed and pushed out through a blowout in the sidewall and perhaps a huge dent. With RFT's that same construction that lets the tire run with no air, is the same construction that lets all that energy through to the wheel." Note the, "IF". I put that there because the OP's original post didn't state the tires used. And yes, aluminum wheels are not that strong, and RFT's make the possibility of damage even worse. |

No disrespect meant guys...i've been in the air force for 14 years and have seen what can happen to the guys in harms way...oddly enough...they often find humor in the most dire of situations. Anyways, That being said...`that pothole was obviously out for vengeance.
