well lets see how many stock and SSTT member will chime in with problems, both in which dont bypass it.
im wondering if any exhaust modifications esp DP's are really effecting and killing the wastegate more quickly. but im trying to stay warranty safe with my car. keeping most mods exterior. |

Although previously I ardently defended HPFP failures as unrelated to Tunes, I think the evidence would now indicate that tunes are a risk factor there, although it's hard to distinguish effects from driving style (presuming a positive correlation between tune and hard driving). Maybe Orb or scalbert would have knowledge regarding the engineering of the wastegate problem.

Ok, I have to ask. What exactly does it mean when you guys talk about bypassing or not bypassing the solenoids? Usually the solenoids discussion also leads to duty cycle? Can someone explain solenoids and duty cycle please? Thanks and sorry for thread high-jacking

What is wrong with the wastegates exactly?
I have had a tune and bypassed solenoid for more than a year now. That must be the reason for my wastegates sounding silent and more healthy than ever. |

i am getting a tune next week.
i'm not really worried. how many tuned cars roaming the forums alone? thousands. how many reported incidents? a handful. lets just say 10. lets assume the tunes are the cause of all of these failures, which they're not. thats still what.. <1% chance. this is assuming you don't drive like you're on crack 24/7. and if you happen to fall in that <1%, spend a few minutes to do a clean uninstall and go in under warranty. and what are the chances you'll lose your warranty? another handful of cases out of thousands of cars having had tunes in them being serviced. so if you take time to do things right you have to be a really unlucky person to have major issues. |

I don't think there is any reason to think the Solenoid bypass would in any way relate to Turbo failure. Driving style, boost level and how hard you push your car when not warm more likely to be related.
One thing I'm curious about though, what type of oil the guys with failure were using, BMW Castrol or some other synthetic? |

OK stop the insanity. a wastegate is a mechanical part consisting of a spring, adjustment rod, and wastegate canister which has a diapragm. ANY mechanical part can break its a law of averages. the 335i wastegate system relies on vacuum to keep the WG closed if the diaphragm tears(semi common) or the canister leaks the wastegate will fail. The only thing that could prematurely cause a wastegate failure in my experience is high EGT over a long period of time(road course) OR the asforementioned mechanical failure. With or Without solenoid bypass is not the cause as the wastegates(both of them) still get the signal to open and close.

eugene,
i forget your everyday altitude, but know u on occasion got up to 10,000 feet. do you think your JB2 plus the H will be o.k. in the summer at 10,000 feet? i am in a similar situation as you approx 9,500 feet and putting in JB2 tomorrow (note i am installing injection on wedsday). i was told that adding an H will probably be too much at my altitude (turbos run out of room).... i would like to know your thoughts on this. thanks

I would be careful and not install the H-pill before the injection, if ever. Ciao, Eugen |
