Blower Motor Squeak
I have been getting this squeaking on certain settings with my climate control. Generally when I have AC on, and the fan speed is about 40% or lower of the max speed. It's a squeal or squeak, next time I hear it I'll take a video and post it. I have seen it mentioned a couple times here or there, but never anything definitive. I'm guessing it's just a bearing in the blower motor?
I had the wiring recall for the blower done about 5,000 miles ago.

Some guys have used turbine oil to lubricate the bearings. There are threads on here somewhere that go through the whole lubricating part of it. You want to be cautious on what lubricants you use, because what ever you spray in there will end up in the cabin, smell in particular. Google Search shows this: https://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum...cation-t92159/ https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=698453 Also on YouTube search: E90 blower fan noise (can't post a link because my work blocks YouTube) Last edited by Wolf 335; 10-09-2018 at 03:15 PM.. |

Take it out and put a few drops of oil on the shaft. It'll eventually come back, but this will at least keep the squeak away for a while. Don't use any sort of spray with a strong smell, as your car will then smell like that every time you turn on the fan.
You'll have to replace the motor for a longer term fix, unless you find a really good lubricant that'll keep it quiet forever. |

Okay, thanks guys. Guess I'll just keep checking my dismantler for a good blower, I dont think it's worth buying a new one unless it breaks or get unbearable. In the interim I might as well pull it out this weekend and fiddle with it.

Either oil the old one or buy new. They all do it so no sense in buying new.
Takes 5 minutes to replace. Look at the DIY on pelican parts. |

one from the yard will likely have the same issue, as they all seem to develop it. oiling it makes it go away for about a week, then it comes back. I've resigned to just replace the blower, because I'm tired of pulling it out and messing with it. |

I tried and it stops squeaking for less than a day. I bought one off Pelican but the problem was my car (in NZ) is Right hand drive and they only supply ones for left hand drive. I got one locally that does the job but now I have a brand new LH drive blower motor that is no good to me. If I was in the States Id be happy to give it to someone for free...you can have it for cost of freight if interested. You tube says you do not have to remove the glove box to remove the blower..just the lower panel. They are right in that respect but its a pain to get it back in again with the glovebox still in. Take out the glovebox and save yourself a heap of grief. Its not a hard job |

A blower motor without the FSR is much cheaper. |

Some of them might start to sound whiny due to rust but I can't confirm that. But I can confirm that they start whining (whistling?) when the brushes are worn down. The only solution is to buy a new one.

If you lubricate it on the onset of the noise, you won't have any issues, 1 year later for me a no noise. I used oil from Home Depot dedicated to furnace fan motors, called "Masters". I also dabbed some lithium grease hoping once the oil evaporates, some grease will make its way on the sleeve bearing.

Check your windshield cowl. It may be separating from the window causing a leak in blower area. I had a blower failure due to leaking and the leak got so bad it damage my fuse/junction box in the same area causing much bigger problems.

Going to bump this thread with a solution that worked for me. I had the squeaky blower at temps below 25 degrees f or below -5 degrees c. It was extremely annoying, and I tried white lithium grease and 3-in-1 motor oil multiple times. I stumbled on this very thin graphite based lubricant from jig-a-loo (can buy in canada, not sure about USA) pictured below.
The important bit about this stuff is that it is very thin, so it will seep in to the bearings. I put a good dose of the stuff on being careful not to spray other parts of the blower. I also made sure to do both the top and bottom bearings, the bottom one is covered by a flap and I missed that in my previous attempts. After reinstalling it will chirp once in a while, but not constantly like it did before. Finally! I plan to take the blower out in the spring and do it again, and then once again before next winter. Won't be replacing the blower until I have a genuine need for a new one, thankfully this seems to be working.

this is another annoyance ive been tackling with my bmw. I did spray it with lithium grease the squeak did go away but it came back. eventually blower motor failure is going to happen. the squeaking noise is associated with a bad dried up bearing i dont think any lub can fix that and only replacement is the answer hopefully a better bearing and balance was used for the replacement part. if we had that lub spray i wouldnt mind giving it a shot though. but most likley its just prolonging the inevitable
