Is there any f'ing point...

...in trying to sell my car privately now?? TMP seems to think I might as well try but I'm not convinced. Don't really want my car being one of those that you see lingering around for ages particularily.

It's now got new tyres so just need to refurb one alloy and it's good to go.

I was thinking about getting Christmas out of the way and then putting it up in early February (snow permitting). I'm unlikely to lose much (if any) value by delaying surely.

Any thoughts??

How well do convertibles sell at this time of year - is it just a myth that people don't buy them now or real??

There will be buyers who think now is a good time to get one. Let them think it, let them think they're getting a deal.

Nah mate, time is of minimal importance, what is the determining factor is trying to shift a large petrol engine in such a market. I think if you price it realistically and take some decent photos. It wont hang around. Regardless of time of year.

Good luck bud.

If you sell it would it cost you money to use another car?

If not, sell it sooner rather than later. If nothing else you'll save a few £100s in tax!

I sold my Z4 last month without any trouble. Only had it just over 6 months but didn't lose a penny on it. Advertised on a forum and beau and had lots of interest.

I think March is meant to be peak season for selling a convertible as the weather is still bad so people think they are getting a bargain. Personally, I believe that if you make a good job of the advert with good pics (I think this part is hugely important) and pick the right places to advertise it will sell.

If you can't be arsed with the hassle how bad are the prices from the likes of webuyanycar, dealerbid etc?

Personally I would say that good pictures and a well formatted advert make a huge difference..

When you read a good advert on Pistonheads or Autotrader you can tell whether its from a car enthusiast or not.

Yeah I've always managed to sell privately when I've tried (touch wood)

Give it a try, wait 2-4 weeks and if no joy, then the dealer won't pay you any less come PX time!

I think it was the case 10+ years ago when verts were the cold, drafty choice but modern cars with multi-layer roofs, decent climate control, seat heaters, air scarfs etc - verts are usable all year round.

Mowflow, didn't know you'd sold - have you replaced it yet?

Do what i did with mine, park it under a lorry at 60mph, saves all the hassle of selling. Ok your neck takes a bit of a pounding

On a serious note, warmer weather makes more people look at soft tops, people who may not of considered one before start to see them on the roads and think "what if"? This is why the market is generally better from April to September.

Crazy ? Yes. Logical? Yes. Make sense? No

An ill advised trip to the local BMW dealership led to me ordering a 125d and putting the Z4 up for sale after the trade in price scared 7 shades of shite out of me. Got double what the dealer offered on a private sale.

Enjoyed the z4, no complaints or problems. Just used frustratingly little as I seem to have both kids more than I thought.

Weirdly enough I was watching Fifth Gear earlier and Jonny Sideburns reckons that auction houses say that there is a £3k difference in selling price of 4x4s in the summer and winter.

I don't know if that is the case with verts. I wouldn't fancy one now.

But I totally agree with good photos and a well written ad will go a long way. I've seen some nice cars for sale on here and when I've clicked the link to the advert I think I wouldn't touch the car if I didn't know it on here as it really lets it down.

Good to know. I'm about to advertise a 4x4.

Doubt I'll get £3k in total for it.

...so I should sell both cars and the price difference should balance out

(if you excuse the fact our 4x4 is in fact 2wd)

Ha ha ha.

Just give it a go Rog and let us know how you get on. You can always advertise it for a couple of weeks and see how you get on. If you don't get any bites then try again in the summer. You could prove/disprove the selling a vert in the winter myth.

I had so many time wasters and complete idiots calling when I had the M3 up for sale; I ended up just asking my local dealers for a price which surprisingly was very high! I decided on keeping it and part ex next year.

Have you spoken to a Nissan dealer? Usually 'verts get a price uplift adjustment at start of spring.

Yup, a UK car, sourced from NI, now re-registered on the mainland. This issue has caused some numpty traders issues but there really shouldn't be.

I'm currently just checking what cars are available and possible make a cheeky strike in Christmas week to see who's desperate for a sale to see if that offsets the low trade-in value. Other than that I'll wait for the weather to perk up a bit and try privately. I think!
