Here are some pics from my mod... if anyone's curious I just used a regular pen cap from a Papermate ink pen...

4 pieces of credit card plastic sized similar to the original piece (small slits cut out) (glue these together now):

original length:

At first, i made my piece the same length as the original; this is wrong since the original piece does not touch the inside of the button all the way, so it needs to be about 8mm longer(final piece):

Place both pieces and compare the height before gluing the pen cap and card pieces:

Once satisfied, glue the pen cap and card pieces together and put the circuit board on and test how the new button feels when pressed; it should have a similar feel as the front fog button... if so snap everything all back and you're done!

Rear fogs (there's ice over the rear lights):

Rear fogs w/ braking:

Ok I gotcha thanks coolchu001... So basically the 4 pieces of card and pen cap are the same height as the white piece? So when you push the black part under the front fog light it will turn on the rear fogs?

Depends on your cap; for me it had to be made about 8mm longer than original piece... 24mm vs 32mm

At first I made the piece the same length, but this would sit much shorter than the original when place into the button. The original piece does not sit all the way in, there are some small ridges that hold the piece out further so that's why the modded piece needs to be longer.

Just did this using a Bic pen cap and a lego. Cut both the pen cap and the lego down to approximate size and then filed them to be a bit more precise. Took me a little while to get everything right, but overall it's a pretty easy mod. Assembled, the new button clicks just like the front fog button and looks no different. Works perfectly.

Highly recommended mod, great first mod to teach you pulling apart the trim and disassembling/modifying/reassembling components.

Did this on my 2011. Much to my surprise the switch already had both white pieces. Therefore all I had to do was cut the tabs. Works great!

yea one thing about the newer models, you will be surprised when you open the switch open... the dealer provided you with the switch already, just cut the tab's and there you go, you have rear fog lights

I've been wanting to do this for so long, but was a little afraid that I was going to screw something up. Well, tonight I was brave enough and well, let's just say that it was so easy! Thanks for the great DIY. The longest portion for me was to find the right lego pieces to make the perfect contact.

Tomorrow morning, when it will be very foggy, I will use them!

Awesome post! Thanks!

Did this mod a few days ago for myself and my buddy, the biggest PITA was actually taking the trim off to remove the lights instrument lol after that, everything just fell together. It was probably one of the best ideas/mods I've ever done. It costs nothing and makes sure everyone can see you better. Not to mention you can hit the switch to "brake check" tail gators without really braking lol

It really is. You can read up all you want about how to please a woman, you can look at all the diagrams in the world, but just like the clitoris, you won't know what the hell an apex is before you actually find it.

I second that. I just did it. Awesome!!! Make sure to have a spare pencap and a credit card to cut up to make the button work.

Next on my list of things to do:
Wrap the window trims
Replace side marker and front turn signals with HPB solution
Reprogram car to have the mirrors, windows, and sunroof retract when the keyfob lock button is pushed.

Not sure what else I can do once those items are complete.

Just wanna let you guys know that I just tried this and the white spacer piece of plastic wasn't present in my unit for the rear foglight button. There was also no LED on the PCB for it, didn't test the button while I had it apart, I should have, but possible the entire circuit doesn't even have the feature wired up based on those two pieces of evidence.

Anyway this was a 2009 328i bought in Canada. Just a heads up for others who might try and wont be able to.

I love this forum. I just did the same mod on 2008 328xi. Mine was also missing the lego extender, so I followed another thread and used a wire nut and nickel that fit perfectly with no additional cutting or gluing needed for them to fit. Just put the two together, made sure it didn't rattle, installed and it's working!

I'll see if I can dig it up, but there's not really anything specific in it other than someone using a wire nut and a nickel for the missing lego piece. I happened to have a bag of mixed nuts (hahaha) from Lowes and one ended up fitting perfectly with the nickel.

It's a super easy mod btw. Just make sure you have some pry tools on hand to get the trim off and separate the switch module.

'11 335d (E90 lci USA) --- works, no Legos/fabrication needed, button piece already in there.

Surprisingly easy & nothing broke off during disassembly. Tabs easily sliced off with boxcutter.

The method to activate rear fog lights described by William is too complicated and not very nice. The easiest and nice way, which I did on my 2008 E90 when I moved to Europe, is to change the control element light to an European one selected depending of the options supported by the vehicule. I personally choosed part number 61 31 6 932 796, which offers all options active: S520A, S521A and S522A. It is plug and play, the rear fog light button is there with the rear fog light indication on dashboard turning on automatically. You don't have to encode or activate the option via Software. It costed me 30 euros for a second hand control element light on ebay.
