DIY Remote Control Exhaust Valve

Had my E92 335i exhaust valve unplugged pretty much since the first day I got it, and prefer it this way 90% of the time. However, on the odd occasion it is good to be able to close the valve on late night cold-starts or when I prefer a little less drone in the cabin. Also soon to be doing the PE mod on my exhaust, so will be using the valve more often.

I have seen at least one product on the market that provides remote control of the valve, but was priced over £100+ when including shipping, so set about making my own for under £20.

Essentially I can open and close the valve using a remote control from inside the cabin while driving, or from outside the car.
Valve can be opened / closed from the moment ignition is ON before starting, or engine ON. When ignition is OFF, key removed etc no voltage is flowing to the system.

1. Ebay wireless activated relay and remote. £7.50
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3219549171...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

2. EV1 male and female connectors. £6
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2622449347...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

3. Automotive cable. x2m. £2.00
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2517377020...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

4. Tesa fabric tape. £2.29
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2811702901...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Below is a very very basic diagram of how the system works. (I do not accept any responsibility if you decide to try this and blow your electric system up! It worked fine for me but I would welcome any comment on the safety of such a device, and have not tested it long-term yet.)

I am happy to provide further assembly details if requested. Very happy with this mod, huge reduction / gain in exhaust tone when switching it on or off. Surprisingly satisfying being able to control the exhaust note with the press of a button!

I see no reason why this wouldn't work on any BMW vacuum exhaust valve that had an EV1 connector.

NOTE: I am not sure if the valve shuts off automatically over 3K RPM (as per normal operation) I still need to test it.

I will try and record a video if I have some time over the next few days.

awesome, I have an iPE exhaust leftover from my R56 and I was wondering how I could use it on my 328xi - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1217655

I'll be reaching out to you in the summer to discuss.

Does your current exhaust have a vacuum valve? If so it might be possible to pipe up the new exhaust lines to that pump...

If not should be fairly simple using an OE vacuum pump, the device above, a 12v feed from somewhere and ground to chassis.

My 328xi currently has the oem exhaust on it, not sure if it has a valve already... can someone else chime in on this?

The iPE on my R56 tapped into an existing vacuum line and used a controller and vacuum canister to control the valve.

Does look like it has a valve:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=18_0611

Not sure how it is actuated though... will see if I can find the pump diagram.

EDIT: Not sure now, as when I look at the catalogue for my car I have a diagram for the vacuum pump under the exhaust section. Might need someone to clarify this though.

Looked like it was below number 15, attached to the side of the right hand pipe (looking from the back of the car) but might not be the correct image.

Hi. I've just bought the bits to make this remote cos I've had the valve open and I find it a bit boomy on the motorway. Have you found out if it still opens the valve over 3000rpm?
Thanks for sharing your design btw.

Cheers

Rob

I've actually made this and can confirm it works as expected! you can wire it to be always open or always closed.

Mine by default works like stock, so its not so noisy in the early morning, but a click of a button and it stays open until i turn the car off.

I bought this and it works great... I did not use the cutout piping, just the remote vacuum pump

Thanks for the tip to alternative solution !

But seems to me little bit overpowered solution, because everything necessary is already on the car (including vacuum pump). Only missing thing is manual control and for this purphose should be remote relay great solution.

I have already ordered this one:
Remote Relay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322476103466

EV1 connector
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-set-2-Pi...8AAOSw6n5XqrlU

Tesa tape and cables I have in stock, after this items arrives, I can post my experience and more pictures from installation. IF I will be successful
