Is there any way to make a 335i sound like an R8 or an RS4?

I would pay to make my 335i sound like an RS4 or R8, but I don't understand enough about the impact of V8 versus I6 engines and exhaust acoustics to know if it's even possible.

They just sound SO good to me... the 335i exhaust note has no bass in it, so it sounds very "weak" to me. (Still sounds decent though... especially from like 2K to 4K, which is nice on a daily basis. In contrast, the E46 330i sounds pretty soulless until about 3,500K.) Thankfully the 335i ENGINE itself sounds great (which is what you hear more of in the dyno clip above.)

Thanks!

That would be tough, hard to get an inline six sound like a V8.

I too agree the R8, RS4, M3, etc. all sound simply amazing!

Have you done the golf tee mod? I've done it and while it doesn't sound like those cars, it's not bad.

I ran into an old friend at Target yesterday and he said my car sounded mean.

I6 will never sound like a V8 period. It's just totally different.

Though you can make your 335 sound pretty badass with a nice exhaust set-up. Not very cheap either.

AE quad exhaust is what I'm getting.

Check out the tuning forum/youtube. There's tons of different exhausts with different sounds. Depends on what you like.

Throw a tune and some other perf goodies on your car and open your window while your blowing past them at the track! You'll be able to enjoy the sound of their exhaust for a few secs at least!!!

The RS4 sounds absolutely scrumptous....especially with the Milltek exhaust setup. I miss that after switching to the e92. Now I am looking at:

1. BMW performance exhaust
2. AE exhaust
3. Vanguard exhaust
4. Dinan

I think they all cost b/t $1400-$1900. Not cheap, but worth it IMO. I am leaning towards 1 and 4 simply b/c I prefer OEM options. Granted, Dinan is not OEM, but is covered under warranty (I believe).

I don't think BMW has the best relationship with Dinan. I was considering the Stage 2 flash before I knew anything about Procede or JB3.....and even my dealer (who's an authorized Dinan distributor) told me not to bother with it.

Warranty battles between BMW and Dinan can become very annoying if anything should occur.

People buy Dinan for "peace of mind" and "warranty", but is it really all it's cracked up to be? Every Dinan car is "flagged" for life. BMW and the next owner will always know you had a tune.

That's what's good about JB3/Procede......You plug it in and take it out when you sell the car. No one knows it's been tuned. (Assuming you're not a dumb ass about it.)

I will say that Dinan does seem to do more extensive research/testing, but it's just too overpriced for what you get. Did you check out their new $1200 CAI?

You can't get the sound of a v8 like Audis 4.2
but your car will sound very good with either the BMW performance exhaust or the bastuck quad. Those are the best 2 n54 exhausts IMHO.
The ae exhaust is very muted and eisenmann is too obnoxious and doesn't even sound good.
Just my 2cents

I did notice that $$$. Ridiculous. And I agree with you. I've heard problems with Dinan and BMW also. That "relationship" is very fragile and not very well defined IMO.

I here you on the JuiceBox 3. That seems like the BEST BANG for the buck, no doubt. I just don't know if I want to go there. Not really sure why. I will likely go OEM PE. I have heard mostly good things about it, although some have posted negative things. But then again, there's always pros/cons about any of these mods.

You're just an OEM type of guy, I get it.

Nothing wrong with that, but you can expect to shell out substantially more $$ and not necessarily gain more.

Me? I haven't tuned my car yet and it's killing me. I don't want to take risks with the warranty should anything happen, and I'm not about to spend $2K+ for a less than adequate Dinan tune. No matter what anyone says no one really knows the long term effects of JB3 or Procede on the engine.....the car just has not been out that long. Tuning my car will happen, it's just a matter of when.

Btw OP, sorry for the

Like the others have said, you're never going to get your car to sound like an R8 or RS4. Engines sound different based on the number of cylinders. 4-bangers sound horrible, I-6's are smooth over everything and V8's rumble. You can get more aggressive sounding with a different exhaust. There are tons of vids posted that can give you an idea of what's possible!

Your best bet is the turner motorsport exhaust. It sounds great without reminding everyone that a honda civic with a coffee can exhaust is near by.

I'm still waiting on the RE guys to sell their diablo exhaust, it's been over a year already.
