adaptations reset will not do transfer-case reset... two separate things. Use DIS. If you change your fluid before the car throws a fault code saying the fluid should be changed then you can get away without the reset. When you reset the case the motors make an easy to hear sound.

Additionally, I understand I'll need to replace the transfer case fluid with BMW fluid (going to get the ECS kit ), but can I use Redline for the diffs and MT fluid? Also maybe a dumb question, but can I drain out the existing fluid (unknown type, assuming BMW) and just put Redline right in? Helpful Redline fluid reference page here - (D6ATF for xi 6MT, 75W90 for the diff)

I changed my fluid and didn't reset the case. I did make sure the car was in 'sleep' mode though before I did it. |

I recently did this. It took a little over 0.5L of fluid. I ended up removing the cross brace that supports the xfer case, this made it much easier to get to the fill plug. If you do this, be sure to support the xfer case with a bottle jack.

Will a battery reset clear the transfer case adaptation?
Getting ready to do the transfer case oil change on my 2011 328. Trying to avoid having to learn how to use DIS to reset the adaptation. Had read elsewhere that a battery reset clears the transfer case adaptation. Can anyone confirm? Thanks. |

Sorta related, I had a whine noise coming from mine last year. Had them replace the fluid in December and it quieted down a little. Just had them do it again today and I didn't hear any whine afterwards. Saw a post over in an X5 forum abut someone who did a few flushes to fix theirs. Only $160 for the indy BMW shop to do it. The transfer case itself is $2,500 ($3k+ installed) so I don't mind a little preventative maintenance. I have 108k miles on the car.

I just did this change on my 2011 335 xdrive sedan. Man what a bitch. Bought a 14mm hex socket from harbor freight, pressed out the hex bit from the socket and used an open ended wrench to get the drain plugs off. YOU NEED A RATCHETING CROW/OPEN END/CLOSED END WRENCH. But really, its the only way you can do it. Oh I also bought the fluid transfer pump at harbor for $6. Worked like a charm. Case took about 75% of a quart. Btw not all open ends will fit in the tight space, try to find the thinnest one you can. And a high quality one with a lot of pawls so you can utilize the 2 clicks of throw you get with the wrench.
