Driver side front door speakers not working

Hi All,

Suddenly my driver's side front door tweeter and midrange speakers are not working. All the other speakers/tweeters in the car are working. I have the part numbers to replace these 2 speakers but I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this before and if they have then what are my DIY options to test if the problem is with the speakers itself or the wiring?

FWIW - sometimes my audio systems won't give out any sound at all even though it is turned on and it will start working normally once the car is turned off and then turned back on. I don't care about this issue as much because this happens maybe once in 6 months or so and I can just turn off the car and turn it back on and it starts working but I am not sure if these 2 issues are linked?

Any thoughts or solutions or checks that you guys recommend I perform before replacing the speakers?

It would be helpful to know what audio system you have. Also, I believe the mid and tweeter are powered off of a single channel, meaning 1 pair of wires going to the mid, from there to the tweeter. IOW, I wouldn't go buying new speakers just yet. It could be a broken wire in the door jamb, a bad amp/headunit channel...

I have the Radio BMW professional CD (P/N# 65129170328)

also, how do I go about testing if the wire is broken in the door jamb or a bad amp/headunit channel?

The head unit is not the sound system be it idrive or pro radio.
Since you have a US 09 you will have either the HI Fi or Logic 7
system . (options 676 and 677 respectively )
Either of those systems has and amp behind the driver side wheel
well under the trunk floor sometimes under the tool kit.
(See the third link Entertainment systems for amp location)

One of the first things to check for is water in the amplifier area.
And since it has been raining hard around here that is something
you want to check for.

The Hi Fi system has a black amp and the Logic 7 has a silver
amp . Logic 7 will have a center dash speaker and both rear deck
and rear door speakers in the 09 year.

If you have an ohm meter you can measure the resistance to
the speakers from the amp connector in the trunk without having
to take off the doors.

Thanks for the info. I don't think the rain has affected this since they haven't been working since around August/September last year. I just was too lazy to bother about it hahaha. Those are a ton of threads and I am a noob at wirings and stuff. I do not have a ohm meter. I am guessing no other way to figure this out other than either replacing the speakers or taking it to a shop for a noob like me?

The amplifier is easy to replace.
If you have the Hi Fi you through a lever to disconnect the amp.
If you have logic 7 there are about three connector the main one
is a slide.
Hi Fi amps are dirt cheap on ebay Logic 7 amps more expensive.
Your local stereo shop is not going to be of much help if you
have a amp problem . Most normal stereo shops around here have no
idea of how to deal with BMW audio problems.

So where you joking when you said this

"Suddenly my driver's side front door tweeter and midrange speakers are not working. All the other speakers/tweeters in the car are working. No, I was not joking when I said suddenly - i guess I should have specified that I suddenly discovered it. My wife drives this car as a DD and after I discovered the problem this past weekend, she said very casually that yeah they haven't been working since a few months now - probably Aug/Sept time frame.

I have a similar issue with my 2011 E90 335i with HiFi audio. Sometimes the left front channel works just fine, and other times it very low or no output at all. I do remember the dealer replacing the amp once after the car was a year or two old, but I've been just living with it lately because I'm selling it (new M2 Comp ED tomorrow). If the amp is bad, is it better to look for an aftermarket part, or just replace it with the OWM unit. Cheaper is better for me :-)

OEM on ebay is cheaper .
Although putting in and aftermarket amp is better in you will
still need a technic harness. And any aftermarket amp that is
worthwhile will cost 300 to 500 bucks.(or more)
