London ULEZ...

Not sure if this has been discussed yet? The ULEZ is coming to London which now due to cover everything inside the A406.

My 2007 330d which I use as a commuter car doesn't comply with the EU6 rules for ULEZ.

I'm considering ditching it and getting a used i3 but just wanted to explore the idea of an EU6 conversion.

An example being: https://baumot.co.uk/products/bnox-scr-system/

Anyone have any experience with these? The work must be carried out by approved installers.

What is the cost of one of these NOX reducing exhaust systems on a car?

As far as i'm aware, even with this retrofitted your car still wont be eligible to enter the ULEZ free of charge. TFL just pull their data from the DVLA/VOSA so if they see you have a 335d for example then it will assume EU5. I cant see any amount of persuading changing their mind. This will just be for your piece of mind!

This is exactly what I was thinking, for this to have any effect, the emissions rating of the car would need to be updated from EU5 to EU6 on the V5/DVLA database.

There is this line on their website - "In the future, this will qualify your vehicle for the forthcoming Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ)."

It is possible they have floated the idea of emission classification changes but until there is confirmation, its just a line of text...

Also..... approx £2500 to retrofit a car......

Hmm, I may have been looking at the wrong link.

I can't find any info on retrofitting a filter to a car

Everything is HGV size through to minibus.

However, as I understand it, the DVSA would update their systems upon receipt of a certificate of work for the filter retrofit. So the vehicle would have an official emissions classification of EU6.

From... https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ult...m-checker-ulez

On 25 October 2021 the ULEZ will be expanded to inner London (the area up to but not including the North and South Circular Roads). A map of the expanded zone is on the Ultra Low Emission Zone page.

You have over 3 years before it comes in!

That's true but April 2019 is when the ULEZ starts. The boundary of which is the congestion charge zone.

£20+ a day to drive through central London.

I'm not saying I don't agree with the charge.

My 2007 e90 has 160k on the clock however I look after it and service it myself. It's in better condition that cars half it's age. As a second vehicle it's perfect for me and I don't really want to get rid of it.

Retrofitting a device which brings emissions up to modern standards is my preferred option.

I've looked into converting my 2009 325d to EU6 but is seems the kits are only available for commercial vehicles. If you have to spend £2500 you may as well swap to a petrol 3 series. I live 0.5 miles inside the ULEZ boundary in North London, it's a real pisser to have to pay every time I get into my car whereas people half a mile up the road don't have to pay. I'll have to use the wife's MX5 to commute to work on the days I go in and just use mine for weekends and suck up the ULEZ charge.

Yes I also couldn’t find anyone who are doing the conversion to “ Standard vehicles“ I get quite attached to my cars and especially my current one as I’ve done quite a few big pricy jobs that needed doing .. I know I wouldn’t get what I want for it if I was to sell .. So the 2.5k would be harsh but I’d have to double that if not more to then get a car I would want.

I had that also being on the boundary line of the congestion charge when it started and lucky I move away a year or so after. There are a few clips on YouTube with local MPs debating in Parliament about the ULEZ and when you hear what they have to say it brings it all to light about it just being a money making profit scheme.. TFL needs the kitty to be bulging again and He’s looking at us motorists to sort that out!
