cold air intake or regular intake?

so, i am thinking about getting a cold air intake, like stett or UR racing, but would there be big difference between those and BMS or afe intakes when it comes to sucking in cold air? stett or UR racing will be in the wheel well, so it will pull cooler air instead of hot air inside the engine (BMS or afe). I live in Arizona where its really hot during the summer so cold air intakes would help. please advise.

Thanks

I got an intake question too. I need to upgrade my intake from stock but I don't want something that's noisy. What are the quietest intakes? Are the BMS/AFE DCI's pretty loud?

I actually wrote a review on a shootout between the DCI and STETT CAI a couple years ago with a lot of data. Here it is...

Read and enjoy boys this is the best thing you can do for these cars before playing with meth or an upgraded IC.

I bought a Stett CAI and love the quality. Just waiting to put it on, but from what I hear performance wise and sound wise is great.

The quietest intake is the stock box. The only "noise" you're gonna hear w/ a BMS/aFe DCI is the turbos spooling. The only problem with this is I've killed my gas mileage since I'm addicted to stomping on the gas just to hear it

The N54 performance forum is about 97% useless threads going over the same shit (whats the best intake? whats the best tune? whats the best fmic?) and the other 3% is actually interesting shit (single turbo kit for N54 / new maps for tune / new product released by _______ ).

Ya, i noticed that...there was a hint of sarcasm in my post

I just came from a 350Z, and was an avid everyday poster/reader for many years on My350z. One thing i have noticed is the bimmer forums are composed of more...willing...individuals.

Personally, I do not think it's stupid to ask the same question again. There are always new users with new experience, and new products constantly hits the market.
Is it not easier just to answer the question, than to be an ass about it and tell the person to search?

exactly, tough crowd, i did my search, i know my options but wanted to ask a specific question about true cold air intake vs the regular one for the hot Arizona weather, if its beneficial to go stett, UR racing vs afe, bms intakes.

I can't wait to get my newly ordered BMS DCI so I can finally start hearing the turbos on my car.

The stock airbox makes me forget this car is actually boosting

IMHO, the best system is to get a DCI "Hot intake" and upgrade your intercooler, if you have the funds. This way, you get the best of both worlds: air volume and temperature, especially at high boost.

+1 IMO, if you're that concerned about hot air coming in a DCI setup, go with the Helix/Mr5 intake setup

Installed an AFE intake this weekend on my car and there is a slight audible difference in spool noise over the stock intake.

I love my dci, though not suggested, running without a an engine cowl or microfilter really makes your car sound great! and makes the stock DV valves sound like its a BOV.

the engine cowl and microfilter is there for filtration, and imo alot of sound deadening.

where is the microfilter?

If the cowl is just there for engine noise i would def remove it so I can hear more of a BOV sound

DO NOT remove this. The cowl which holds a micro filter is to filter the air coming into the cabin. Unless you want gross ht air and nasty dust/dirt coming through your cab forget it.

As another member said, if you really wanna hear the turbo spool go DCI and go DownPipe. These two things will be automatic sex when you drive.

Oh, and don't forget the tune!
The higher the boost the better the orgasmic sound lol

I have no idea wat you're talking about with the BOV sound. If you can hear your DVs to the point where it sounds similar to a BOV, you might want to investigate that & see if you're leaking. DVs recirculate pressure back into your CP, while BOVs vent directly into the atmosphere. You can disconnect your DVs and use them as BOVs, but you're going to need a cone filter to prevent dirt/dust/bs from entering the CP.

+1, unless you're strictly using your car to track/drag, I'd leave my cowl filter on. If you really wanna hear your turbos at work, just get a tune, intake & catless DPs. Just from my COBB Stg. 1 + an aFe intake, I can hear my turbos spooling the second the boost has built up.
