Retrofitted i-drive controller does not work with first press of the day

A few years ago I replaced my 09 E70 CCC with a CIC. Each morning when I start the car, my i-drive controller does not respond to the first press of the session. I can hold a button down for a couple of seconds and it will work. Or just pressing any button a second time will do what I want. It works fine from that point forward. It seems like the first press wakes it up. I updated the firmware and changed the vin to match. Donor controller was from an E90 but part number matched E70. Anything else to check?

thanks
