Needed help - 2006 330i coding 6FL USB - Now: SUCCESS!!!

Let me start by saying I have searched a zillion times, and read numerous threads, and posts regarding coding 6FL, but I can't get it to work.

I recently picked up a 2006 E90 330i. She has the S640 Bluetooth Phone Prep option. She also has the Logic 7 sound system. I am currently sourcing the parts to get the Bluetooth going, and since I already have a MULF2 High, I decided to use it for the Bluetooth, and to do the 6FL as well.

I've installed the MULF2, reconfigured the MOST distribution block per the 6FL Retrofit instructions, swapped the connector from the prep harness to the blue MULF2 connector, and connected a USB cable from the MULF2 to the USB/AUX plug.

As far as I can tell, the hardware side is taken care of. This leaves the coding.

I added $6FL to the VO in the CAS and NFRM (I upgraded the old FRM1 to FRM2), faked the production date, and default coded the MULF2 and 2URAD. When I read the 2URAD, there are no usb entries whatsoever, so I'm thinking this is where the issue is. Pretty much all the threads/posts I've read talk about coding the 2RAD. This is where I'm stuck.

So, if anyone can just lay out step by step, what I need to do to get the USB going, I would be HIGHLY appreciative! I'm at my wits' end...

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

first of all because it's an 06 and the usb option wasn't offered
in that year there are some tricks you have to do to get that option
into that year car. As long as the software recognizes the car as an
06 you won't be able to load the option.
Changing the production date of the car to load the option is the only
way to do it.

The option is called ulf in the radio file .
That is for the mulf.

Actually it's much easier and cheaper to install one of these.

notice ULF ECE would need to be aktiv.

Look in the Mulf file for similar lines for bluetooth and ulf activation.

Also you have to default code (VO code)the modules for the new VO codes to be read
into the modules that the changes are to made in.

Hey thanks. I've looked at most (if not all) of those threads, but you just gave me a new piece of info: the ULF_ECE setting in the radio file. I didn't know about that. Thanks!

As I said, I did the production date trick, and I did default code the MULF2 and 2URAD modules. I was looking for usb options in the radio file, and none ever showed up. I set all the usb options I found in the 2ULF file "aktiv", except the one referencing the USB hub, since I don't have one in the car. I'll check for ULF activation entries in that file, and see if changing that ULF_ECE setting to "aktiv" will do the trick. Fingers crossed! I hope this works. I've been pulling my hair out, haha!!

Thanks, again!

Cheers!

USB should show up as an option in the menu that has cd aux cdc radio and
telephone in it in it when it is enabled.

So I set the ULF_ECE entry in the radio file to "aktiv", set all the USB related entries in the MULF2 file to "aktiv" (didn't find any ULF entries). Still nothing...

It looks like the head unit has never been flashed with an updated firmware. INPA reports the date as 2006, the year of the car. I'm thinking this is my problem... unless anyone else knows for sure?

Cheers!

Ok, making some progress. I flashed the head unit using WinKFP, and now I have the USB option in the TRC file. The HU had never been updated. I set the USB_RAD and ULF_ECE options to "aktiv", and now USB shows up on the HU display, and the armrest aux port no longer works (AUX no longer shows up on the HU display either)! BUT, it's disabled. I have a USB stick plugged in, but the HU display just shows 2 lines, and nothing happens when I press the button associated with the USB option on the display.

I'm trying a couple of other things I've read about:

I am currently flashing the MULF2 with WinKFP (there was an update available). Once I'm done that, I will add +KMP3 and +IPOD to the VO in CAS and NFRM, and do an SG_RESET on the 2URAD and 2MULF modules. Hopefully, that does the trick. I'll report my success/failure when I'm done. Wish me luck!

Cheers!

Well, after over 2 hours updating the MULF, adding +KMP3 and +IPOD to the VO, and running SG_RESET on the 2URAD and 2MULF modules, I'm stuck. The USB option is on the HU display, the USB port IS getting power, but nothing happens when I plug a USB stick in... the display just has 2 lines on the USB option, and is unselectable... AND, now I don't even have the AUX available to play music through... I can't figure out what I'm missing here...

Some cars has the USB Hub which is usually located on the US driver side
kick panel . And it was also a powered device with a fuse. I don't know if this was both in Idrive and pro radio cars or only Idrive.
I would think you could bypass this with cabling.

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/

Look up Mulf 2 hi in the above link.
They call it ulf hi in that link I believe.

georges links
https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/at...9&d=1539905743

When you program in the Mulf 2 hi the aux connection is switched
to the Mulf 2 Hi Module
Pull up the Mulf 2 hi schematic and look at it.
Both Usb and aus come from the Mulf 2 hi.

Also I recall that some companies like BMWretrofits sell a TCU to mulf 2 hi
harness to get away from some of the repinning you have to do if
you use a mulf 2 hi to replace a tcu.

Finally... SUCCESS!!!!!

I found one more thing to add to my VO: +ULF2. I added it to the CAS and NFRM, then instead of running SG_RESET on the 2URAD and 2MULF modules, I ran sg_codieren with a blank MAN file. That did the trick! I have full USB functionality, and AUX is on the HU display, and is enabled,, so once I wire the aux port to the MULF2, I will have that functionality back, too! I am SOOOO happy!! I was pulling my hair out!!

So, in summary, this is what I needed coding-wise:

Used WinKFP to flash the 2URAD and 2MULF modules
Added $6FL, +KMP3, +IPOD, +ULF2 to the VO, in CAS and NFRM
Default coded the 2URAD and 2MULF modules using a blank MAN file.

This list is what I was hoping to find when I posted this thread. I'm just so happy that it works!!!

Next up will be adding Bluetooth. That should be a lot smoother, as there is a LOT more info out there regarding that!

Cheers!

I didn't install the USB hub. Just have the straight connection between the MULF2 and Aux/USB plug.

I prefer a factory install.

The hardware I added for the USB install was a MULF2 Hi SVS, blue MULF2 connector housing, USB fakra cable, and USB/Aux plug. My car already had the S640 Phone Prep, so I just had to swap the 2 connectors in the white TCU housing to the blue MULF2 housing, and plug in the MOST cable (I, of course, had to reconfigure the MOST junction box per the instructions). I still have to wire the Aux port, and add the terminals to the appropriate connectors now living in the blue MULF2 housing. I have the pinouts, so that should be fairly easy.

The hardware side was dead easy. The coding was a hassle, only because it was so hard to find the info I needed. Once I had that, it's easy, too.

Cheers!

A quick update.

Instead of fabricating a harness for the AUX plug to MULF2, I bought a USB/AUX kit off Amazon, for less than 20 bucks (it includes the USB/AUX plug, Fakra cable, and AUX harness).

I removed the large connector (I assume it's meant to go into the USB hub that I didn't install ), and installed the individual terminals into the MULF2 connector, according to the pinout I have. The large AUX connector only had 3 terminals, and I have the pinout for 4. The small connector that goes into the AUX connector has 4 terminals, but pins 1 and 2 are jumpered. So, I installed AUX connector pin 2 into MULF2 connector pin 22, AUX connector pin 3 to MULF2 connector pin 5, and AUX connector pin 1 to MULF2 connector pin 4. Plugged in an mp3 player, chose AUX on the HU, and everything worked perfectly!

I haven't run the wiring up to the armrest yet, since it's winter now, and I don't have a garage to work inside, but I'll be doing that in the spring. For now, I just leave a USB stick plugged into the USB port currently sitting loose in the trunk. It's so awesome to have that functionality.

As a side note, I also installed the components for Bluetooth (BT antenna, speaker, microphone), added S644 to the VO, default coded the HU and MULF2, and I have full BT/voice command functionality.

Also, my original HU had the typical display panel lcd fade out, so I replaced it. I found one manufactured in late 2008 on Ebay, so I also coded the Kombi for the updated gongs. Easy peasy, thanks to the info on this site.

Thanks to all who helped me out!

Cheers!

Could you list the contents of the 2urad file and the Mulf 2 hi file.
Did you use only a K/D can cable or did you use and Icom cable?

All done with a K/D Can cable. I'll read the modules and post the TRC files tomorrow.

BTW, I flashed the MULF2 with WinKFP using the K/D Can cable.

Cheers!
I don't suppose you have a link for the usb kit you got on Amazon? I can't seem to find it.

I'm currently going through the same issue as you with the usb. Going to try and add +ulf2 to vo now.

This is the kit I bought. And wow, the price has dropped by more than 50%! I only used the AUX wiring harness from it, so I have no idea how good the fakra cable or USB/Aux socket are, but for 8 bucks, it's worth a try!
