Delete/ Tune reliability- anyone have lots of miles on them?

All- I commute about 100 miles a day, and with my active tank semmingly on the way out, it's looking to be time for some deletes and tunes.(OR, do I repair with the VW part and call it a day? I'm not sure... as I do live in a state with emissions, but think I can find a place to "inspect" it) I value mpg, towing ability, and reliability. I'm not after all out power or anything. More is nice, but if it means less reliability, or drastically less MPG, I'd hold off. Also- I'm wondering how brutally smelly the truck would become.

Being new to the m57, I've researched as much as I easily have found- I know the DPF / DEF system needs deleting, the EGR valve is restrictive and could possibly be removed or blocked off, and the SCR- I'm not sure- does that system get removed? or just disabled through tuning?

I've read up on it, and is the least expensive way to make this motor as reliable as possible to delete the DPF with a downpipe, block off the EGR, and tune it all out? I've hear of JRR and Malone tuning, and BRR, but are any tunes more reliable than others? Again, just want to make this truck as reliable as possible, I plan on keeping it around for a while.

These are probably the most comprehensive guides to M57 questions and deletes. You can find just about any answer you may have on those two links

First things first, electrically delete the egr to prevent further cbu:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...cal+egr+delete

Then you can follow the path you choose using the threads DieselDemonDM provided links to. That basically has everything you'll need.

My opinion on tunes is BRR is the best

In that thread, I read that USA versions might be slightly different- and no clear answer whether it would work came up. People seem to get increased fuel economy, which leads me to REALLY want to do this mod. I want to confirm that it'll work with my truck though. I already have engine codes for the active tank, so the engine light wont be new for another code...

My Active tank is failing, so I'm hoping that the DPF regens are happening still, even without the DEF. Since I'm getting active tank codes, I'm not sure DEF is being used.

Hunting reliability claims is going to get you no where really. There is zero proof of one tune being more reliable than the other. i have yet to see a post where someone said "ever since i tuned I had problems". also to further add to the tuning options there is zero proof that one tune is superior to the other. it all comes down to money.
here are you options.

**IF your emissions test is plugged into the OBD port only you need to make sure your tuner has the readiness checks enabled or YOU WILL FAIL your emissions test. you will need to verify with the tuner
** IF your emissions test is done on a dyno and you have a sniffer up your tailpipe YOU WILL FAIL your emissions test. NO way around this
**whatever tune you choose you will need to tell the tuner what codes you currently have, otherwise you could have slight issues when you get your computer back.

----pricing not 100% verified just going off the brain last time i looked----
dudmd- $500 stock tune with emission deletes
BRR- $650 full tune with emission deletes (i currently have this tune)
dudmd- $750 full tune with emission deletes
JR- $1000+ full tune with emission deletes
Malone $1000+ full tune with emission deletes
BCP $1000+ full tune with emission deletes
prices are for the tune alone without shipping or down pipe

only way to tell if you are getting regens is to use an app like torque or use a handheld scanner.

This mod should work for you. It was my first mod. It got me through until I got my block off plates installed. All it does is keep the egr valve on the intake side closed. It'll throw and ses, but no limp or anything. And if you need to be tested just reinsert the pin and plug it in and ses will go away

Oh.... Tuners can enable the readiness checks?! My state is only OBD- being able to pass that is a game changer and I'll delete+tune asap!

Yeah, I'd be interested in knowing which timers set readiness checks to passed. Would be very valuable to know.

Is it possible to have readiness monitors show OK on a deleted car? I've never seen that.
