Thanks! Some idiot hit my mirror and cracked the inner plastic ring area (not the cover)... looks like replacing that would be much easier than I thought (I was expecting I need to remove the entire mirror assembly).

How to remove the supporting Ring (Black plastic opposite of mirror cap)
Just to clarify. You don't twist the black knob indicated in previous post.
1. Remove the glass mirror. Adjust your mirror all the way down and left so you can reach inside the pop the mirror out. Not much force is needed and don't worry about the tabs. 2. There are three T-10 screws (Polydrive). 1. one connecting to motor and 2 from the supporting ring to the frame. Untighten. 3. Unplug the connector at the back (this is connected to the motor) 4. Remove the broken supporting ring. Take a flat head screwdriver and wedge out the plastic clips to the frame. This will also remove the motor as well. The motor sits on top of it and is only connected by the screw (as mentioned in item #3) and connector at the back. 5. Replace the supporting ring. Fish the mirror through. Snap the supporting ring it into place. Put the motor back on and connect it on the back. Tighten the screws. Snap back on the glass mirror and your mirror cap. Time: 5 Mins |

FANTASTIC write up - I can add my own "Thanks!" to the long list.
But....it's CRAZY to think that if someone had a scratch on their side view mirror and wanted mine, all they would have to do is "pop" mine off!!! WILD, I expect more from BMW. In this case, it's quite helpful, but in GENERAL, not so much. My G35 doesn't have a cover, it's the interior casing where the mirror sits....wild... Thanks again! -WoW |

Does anyone know if you can unplug all motor operations by just removing the cover, or do you have to pull the glass out or mirror off the car? The reason I am asking is because mine has some sort of issue that it is always trying to adjust and makes noise when i'm driving. I dont have the funds right now to just replace the whole thing, so for a temporary fix, I am just going to disconnect it.

Nice DIY. I have a 2011 335i and the mirror cover snapped off just fine. You have to pull pretty hard to snap them off. Now when you get the cover off there is no clip to remove the black ring. You actually have to remove the mirror (just a screw driver wedged in and pry it out) The mirror will pop out easily. Once you remove the mirror there is a wire that has to be removed. Then there are 4 screws you have to remove, from the inside and the black ring will slide off. It is best to adjust your mirror to the highest angle in order to clear the clips. Sorry I didn't take pics. But you can PM me and I can give you more info.

I'm not sure why, but I can't get these damn side mirror covers off! I'm trying to do it like you said with just using pressure with your fingers in the crease. Maybe I'm just not strong enough. Any other tips or ways I can do this? I can't even get a good grip on the mirror cover. Not sure if covers are diff for E90 LCI or I'm just dumb

I have a LCI and it took a little bit to get them off. This is what I did, use a soft cloth and a panel remover tool or anything hard plastic that is about the same size. place the cloth over the cover and use the tool to create a gap on the top, then move around until you have enough room to stick your finger tips in. Pry with your hands slow and easy, you can hear and feel the clips give way a little bit. Do this around the whole cover then it will pop right off. I did it like this on mine and it worked great. I thought I was going to break them but the clips didn't break at all. Just be calm and take your time.

To go along with this DIY, does anyone know how to remove the mirror portion? Mine doesnt seem to want to go towards the upper right corner and i think something is preventing this and I'd like to check it out before I send it into the stealership.

After you get the mirror cap off, the trim piece is easy. First you have to pop off the mirror. I use a plastic tool and put it behind the mirror and it will pop off pretty easily. After that their are 4 screws that hold the mirror ring on that can easily be removed and the mirror ring will slide off. I covered mirror ring with vinyl but had a really time getting it perfect so I ended up painting the ring with plastidip and it turned out really good. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help

just fixed my broken trim ring...
I have a 2013 328 that had a broken trim ring on the driver's side, and it took me about 10 minutes to fix. The part was $31 from ECS. There are only a few differences from the instructions above that I took note of:
1. Remove the front cover of the mirror. It will pull straight off with a little force around each edge. Be careful. 2. Remove the mirror's glass. Adjust your mirror all the way down and left so you can reach inside the outer edge and pop the mirror out. Not much force is needed. There are two wires with simple connectors that unclip from the mirror. Take note of the tabs to which each is connected. 3. Take note of the motor's orientation, then remove the screw holding it in place and let it hang. 4. Remove the 4 torx screws holding the trim ring to the metal frame and remove the trim ring, pulling the motor through the hole in the middle. 5. Put the new trim ring in place by feeding the motor back through the hole and reattaching the 4 short black screws that hold it in place. 6. Line the motor up with its guide on the outer edge of the metal frame, and reattach it with the 1 long, silver screw. 7. Reattach the wires to the mirror glass on the correct tabs, and clip it into place on the motor's mounting points. 8. Replace the front cover by lining up the tabs and slowly working it back and forth until it clips into place. There should be no visible gaps between it and the trim ring once it lines up correctly. 9. Start the car and test the mirror to be sure it moves freely. Screws
There are T10 torx crews on the back side of this piece (that hold the mechanism to the plastic). They need to come off, 3 are black, and one in the middle that is silver. The middle one holds the piece that is round that adjusts the rear view mirror, behind it is a connector so you need to pull it straight out. All the front tabs including the one in the pic with the yellow circle are molded to the plastic, they do not move or turn. To reassemble just line up the big tabs in the center and push firmly it will all snap in place. Then put the 2 T10 torx screws back in and then the round center piece with the silver screw. It is a long one so it will take many turns to tighten up.
