2013 Map updates - USB Stick

Like many of you, I just got the Tischer email announcing that they are now directly selling the 2013 nav updates for CIC systems. $235.

The CIC maps (North America Premium) are now on a USB stick, instead of DVDs. As a result, the old OEM DVD map part number (01990037287) is no longer valid to order the 2013 map media. Any idea what the new part number would be to order just the stick - assuming it can still be had for the $10-$15 that the old DVDs could?

I sent an email to Tischer asking if you can buy just the media without the FSC code. I will let you know what they say.

And to answer your question, yes, you can order just the media. They have apparently built that option into the website:

Could you give more details, and what this will end up costing?

How much will the code cost?

Might there be a torrent available shortly?

Sergej, aka *******, is a known reputable source of Navigation update FSC codes for far less than the dealers charge. I'd suggest contacting him directly for his pricing. Email is: *****************

I used him for my 2012 update and was very satisfied with the transaction.

^^Precisely. He is waiting to get a copy of the maps himself so he can generate the codes. (I already emailed him )

As far as the Torrent, I have never done that before so I have no idea how. I am sure they will become available pretty quick though. $42 for not having to deal with the download seems reasonable to me though.

I think it is interesting that the maps are coming on USB media now. If nothing else the media should make for a good music drive when I am done upgrading the maps.

FYI, these only apply to the CIC navigation systems. The CCC still uses the DVD's.

Gentlemen, just to confirm,I am coming up with conflicting info,is the dealer the only option for CIC equipped vehicles up to 9/2009? The info below is from Tischer.

CIC equipped vehicles up to 9/2009 require FSC Code + a visit to your local BMW dealership for media upload.
**CIC equipped vehicles from 9/2009 and on include the USB media kit + FSC Code (code will be emailed). No trip to the local dealership is required.

For CIC cars you do not need to visit the dealer. You used to have to to get the FSC code but Tischer is providing that now (or you can get it from *******).

The way the upgrade works is you start the car. Insert the new media (used to be three DVD's but is now USB media). The car will detect the new data and prompt you to enter the FSC code. Once you enter it the car will begin downloading the data from the USB to the internal hard drive. This can take some time (couple hours at least). You can turn off the car during the download and it will begin where it left off when you start up again. During this process you will not be able to use the navigation.

Hope that clears things up.

Has anybody checked on whether they can provide a download link for the update so that we can put it on our own media? I think a USB stick could be had for less than $42.

I highly doubt they would provide it for download. It is really nice they even offer the media without the FSC code even. It will very likely be up on the torrents pretty quickly after folks start getting it. If you want something for free you will have to take what you can get I expect.

Apparently - this may not be the case. Cars manufactured before 09/2009 appear to have a different CIC --- possibly with only a 40GB HD instead of an 80GB --- and the USB upgrade method doesn't work.

My 328xiT is a 08/2009 and I was unable to update to 2012 maps using USB no matter what I tried -- FAT32 or FAT or NTFS partitions --- 8GB, 16GB or 32GB thumb drives --- SANDISK, Imation or some other manufacturer --- bootable or unbootable, using Linux or Windows to format --- made no difference. The update would not start when the USB stick was inserted into the glove compartment port. Not even starting the update with the first DVD and trying to use the USB instead of the last 2 DVDs would work. I finally just painfully installed using DVD. Had to reburn the DVDs a few times to get ones that would work all the way through.

I can use the USB port to download music to the hard drive without difficulty, therfore the USB glove compartment port is "working". The ISTA/P software was updated in Sep 2010 (to version 2.37.1 I believe) and the maps to v 2010 by the dealer when I purchased the vehicle.

I have independent confirmation from two different BMW dealers -- Tischer and WG BMW near Philadelphia that the USB method will not work with my car. They're both happy to sell me the FSC code but I need to take the car to the dealer to upload the media -- $322 total. I believe my inquiry to Tischer is the reason they put the pre-09/2009 info on their web page.

As always YMMV

It depends on whether you have the business/motion or premium/professional nav system. The wide screen premium/professional version apparently can only be updated with DVDs, according to this post:

I didn't mean I wanted it for free. I just wanted to save on the USB stick. I would still have to purchase the FSC code.

In any case, I guess my car requires DVDs, since I have the premium/professional nav system. (Ignore my sig, I need to update it to the 2012 335xi coupe.)

Not sure why you could not do it.

I have a 2009 LCI (production date of 2008-09-04) in Canada.

I did the 2012 map update through USB and with the FSC code from *******.

It is the 8" widescreen NAVI. Worked without any issue. I will updating to 2013 right away.

But isn't it funny they have a 2013 map update its end of 2012? They should do a 2013 map update at the end of 2013! Yeash.

I understand although I still don't think they would offer it for download. BMW's idea for this upgrade is that you are supposed to come in to the dealer to have it done. It is a great thing Tischer is offering them through.

I'm not sure about the DVD vs USB method. I have a 2011 with navigation. I did update to 2012 with DVDs earlier this year. I gave my VIN to Tischer when I ordered the USB and they didn't say I couldn't use it so I assume it will work.

We shall see...

USB shipped. I have not received it yet though. ******* hasn't gotten back yet saying he can generate the FSC codes either. He is waiting on getting the maps himself as well.

This was the same post I used in May to update my maps from 2009 to 2012. DVD only for a 2010 with the Professional CIC system.
