Depends on which metal ticking noise, but the one most people complain about is the fuel pressure release valve, you will know it is the pressure releases valve cause if you blip the throttle it goes away. It will come back after a second or two. (this is a normal noise on this car).
If the tick is anything else other then the above, I'm not sure. |

I think Jeff may have it. But I have never experienced this till today actually. So I can't say I agree that the sound is normal. It does go away if I blip the throttle and reoccurs when the RPMs get back down to ~600.

I had this same ticking sound on my 07 when Idling; Applying little gas will make it go away and after letting off it comes back. Haven't had it for couple of months tho. I thought they were the lifters.

Had a similar sound on mine, turned out the Torque converter bolt was not torque correctly and torque converter was not seated correctly. The noise would happen once in awhile, only when it was cold outside. The dealer fixed the issue and no more metal clicking noise.

It's either I deal with that garbage on idle with the Cobb installed. Or uninstall the Cobb and have the usual waste gate rattle with deceleration...

I just ordered a cobb and my CPO just expired this month. Sound like the rocker arms or valve tap. I guess I am going to see if BMW will take a look before I install the COBB.

Yes, that is normal. That is the fuel pressure release valve. The HPFP pushes a lot of pressure that is excessive at idle.

Mine Also makes that noise. If you touch the throttle very slowly, so slightly that the rpms don't even increase, the noise goes away for a second. Weird.

I have the exact sound of the first video, its on the driver side, it only happens on the fist start up in the morning when the engine idle at 600 rpm and its cold the engine you can hear on the driver side a tiki tiki tiki tiki sound, then as the car starts warming up that sound decrease until disapear and reocurs next day, any idea? Idler pulley? I replace serpentine belt two months ago but no pulleys, fuel pump? Anyone here knows?

That's sounds more like your downpipes or exhaust vibrating against something then wastegate rattle, might just be the video quality. And before someone says "it goes away when the gas pedal is pressed". I had the exact issue on my exhaust with the v brace, it would vibrate at idle and go away when driving. I adjusted the hangers and no more vibration.

Dude we already explained to you in your other thread.
You only hear the noise 1. On a cold start (negative F) 2. Only if the car was not driven for 8-10hrs. 3. Noise varies with RPM and goes away as car warms up. IT IS YOUR LIFTERS that are ticking. You have an 08 so it has the original lifters and head. Revision was not done till 09 or 10. I had the repair done on my 07 when it was under warranty. First they replaced the lifters but the noise came back so then they replaced the head. This was not a recall so if you are out of warranty BMW will not cover the replacement. Let your car warm up correctly and it will be fine.. If you really want this fixed ask your mechanic how much for a new head and lifters? Although cost will probably be around $4k+ . |

Guys this was resolved by using liqui moly or motul oil bmw LL-01. Another friend had the same thing and changing to LM oil resolved his too, This shows factory oil doesn’t provide adequate lubrication on idle when the oil pressure is low.
