Prices will be forthcoming in a few days I'd imagine. Stage 1 makes sense with even a normal flash tune or piggy back - it is more efficient and allows the engine to develop more power at the same boost levels. The Stage 2 variants really need a custom remap or piggyback, and also hi-flow downpipes to make the most of the increase in turbo performance. The boost pressures the Stage 2 will be able to run are considerably higher than the stock turbos, and you need to balance the flow by reducing back pressure as much as possible (ie going to catless downpipes) A dealer won't be able to tell the difference between a normal turbo, a Stage 1 turbo, or even a Stage 2 turbo!! All the changes are internal with no external visible identifying marks suggesting there have been wholesale changes!

Tony, I'm interested in doing this.
In all honesty - are the prices going to be prohibitive/piss takingly high? Will there be an exchange system to speed up turnaround? If not, what's the turnaround gonna be? All questions you may not have the remit/inclination to answer but I'm just asking!! Matt |

Matt, have you done any engine mods yet or are you just adding more and more to an already long pending list?
So stage 3 map, FMIC etc plus stage 2 turbos (2 of them) must be at least stage 7 or maybe even stage 12? Last edited by doughboy; 03-24-2010 at 05:30 AM.. |

TD or Tial(EPL)... hm... hard decision... guess i need to see the pricing and more detail info from both before i make any decisions... i'm glad there is more than one choice now...
any words from TD about our engine potential? i'm sure newer turbo can take more boost and beat but how much more our engine/tranny can take is another question.

Through Birds there will be an exchange turbo program, whereby you send in your old turbos and they send out a suitably modified version. I personally don't think the costs (when they're finally released) are prohibitively high, and certainly not piss-takingly high given the amount of work needed and the performance increase afterwards. I'll give you an example of the work, and actually this also provides a timely update as to what we're doing! The new turbos have been mounted onto the engine, and we have been fabricating brand new oil lines and water lines to fit around the new core. The standard BMW lines are not compatible with the new turbo core. Just the planning of these oil and water lines has taken us two days of work, because we have to take into account any blockages or 'fouling' conditions that may result. We also discovered when taking the BMW OEM oil lines down, that the layout of some of the lines are very odd, with crinks and bends in the lines where there shouldn't be any. One of the bends was almost 180 degrees on itself, and the aperture for the oil to flow through was miniscule. We have redesigned the hoses so that full flow rate of both oil and water can be maintained. There's a lot more work to an upgrade like this than just making a new set of turbos and bolting them on! Little things, like placement of heat shields to prevent heat radiation into the lines, take an inordinate amount of time to plan and make. We've also taken the decision to encase the oil and water lines in a heatproof shielding to reduce heat transfer as much as possible. It will take a day or two more to get the car in fully working order - in time for the 'Ring, but not in time for UK9 in the Peak District sadly Will update soon with pictures |

Great work! Looking forward to seeing that in action in a few days.
Now, are the turbos mounted yet? Any first driving impressions? I must still be satisfied with a JB3 currently... Alpina_B3_Lux

Let's see what happens... if you see a bright light and hear a big bang near Heathrow, it's not a plane shot down, it's my car exploding
