Squeaky Steering Wheel

Hello motorheads,

My steering wheel squeaks. At first it would go away if you drove it for a little while, but it's gotten worse. I've attached a video of it. Anyone knowing how to fix this, please chime in. I realize I'll have to take the wheel off, and I'm sure WD-40 isn't the answer.

Thanks, guys!

i had the same problem. they replaced the entire szl module, which i believe is the portion of the steering wheel with the signal and wiper stalks. i recommend taking your video into the dealership and showing your sa. worked for me.

could be a couple things. the szl module as mentioned or the base of the steering column as it passes thru the firewall.....

listening to your video, i think it is the steering column where it enters the firewall.
mine does this everytime it starts to get cold out, i remove the plastic panel under the dash, be careful with the fiber optic running under there. you will see the metal steering column enter a rubber boot/sleeve looking thing, i literally spray inside that boot with a few bursts of liquid wrench silicone spray or WD40 (lol, it is the answer), then turn the steering back and forth a few times. squeeking goes away until next year.

I had the same issue in my '06; the dealer had to replace some assembly in the steering column and it fixed it.

So I saw that rubber thing and sprayed it, but the squeak is still there. Any other suggestions anyone?

Mine made a moaning sound when cold while turning to the left. It would resolve once warmed up. Apparently there is a "Noisy steering" bulletin, and the dealership fixed mine...I think it involved lubricating a dust boot on the steering column. Good luck!

hey, not to beat a dead horse, but was it this thing you sprayed? you can slide the boot down the shaft a bit and i used the straw attachment for my spray lube to get between the shaft and boot. something in there makes mine squeak. a few 3 second bursts. rotate wheel and a couple more shots.

i swear mine sounds just like yours and goes away when i do this. same annoying noise.

(thanks to whoevers image that is by the way)

Thanks for the update/pic! I might not have gone back far enough to get it in the boot. I'll try this out. Thanks!

its a real pain in the ass, upside down on your back, trying to wedge the spray can tube thing in a gap, close your eyes when you spray since you are most likely going to be directly under it if it drips. worth it though.

I've got a squeaking wheel and a rattle in the dash, my car is starting to drive me crazy! Does oiling the boot actually work??

does for me, every year when it gets cold it starts to squeak and i shoot some liquid wrench type oil down between that boot and the shaft using the straw/tube nozzle thing.

remove the plastic panel under your dash and be careful not to f-up the fiber optic thing that connects under there.

My steering wheel squeaks as well, but only when cold and turning to the right. After about 1 minute of driving it's gone. It's been like this since day 1 (new)

I did some research a few months back and found it is a common problem with the sport steering wheels.

I'm going to take it to the dealer and hopefully get it fixed under warranty. Though it's not on top of my priority list right now since performance is not affected.

My steering wheel has started squeaking again this year. Always starts when the cooler weather hits. This year is worse than normal and I have to do something. Mike I saw your post and picture but was hoping there was a bit more detail somewhere. Is the picture you are showing taken by looking under the dash?
