Lets talk about Breathers...

Whilst waiting for my car to go in next week for the DPF to be re-instated I thought I would do air filter and crankcase breather. I purchased one off Ebay that looks identical to the current one on the car(genuine BMW) however it came with a little cartridge. What does it do?

In the end I fitted exactly what was removed as couldn't see what this cartridge would achieve.

I take it you have an m57 engine? The filters were removed by BMW.

I think the general consensus was this was to aid the swirl flap mechanics.

Yes M57. That is interesting to know, I was told when I bought my car the swirl flaps had been removed although I've never checked.

im ahve been in contact with a ex bmw tech,,he now has his own place and he will be servicing my 335d gearbox/vac lines removal of swirls etc,,he has told me the vortex filter is just that now,,it has not got a loo roll or a cartridge,,but he says i should fit a loo roll breather as the swirls and dpf are getting sorted..he did say it was just a matter of precaution and peace of mind,,but for the cost ill get it done..

But your swirlflaps have been removed and blanked yes? I think only the m57 325d came with a manifold without flaps.
