My New 318i edition SE 2008... With Issues

Hi All

I have just purchased a 2008 318i edition SE as a second car.

I picked it up fairly cheap as it has the following issues:
- Only the Drivers Door Unlock/Locks with the remote. The rest have to be manually opened and close.

- The windscreen washer doest work. The pump makes a sound but nothing comes out. There is fluid in the reservoir so I'm assuming it is a blockage.

- Auto Stop function doesn't appear to work.

- 2 Tyres need replacing. I also seem to have a spare alloy wheel in the boot.

- Front Passenger side bumper/spoiler needs popping out.

- Humming noise coming from the rear

- Only One Key

Its not all doom and gloom.

As its a Edition SE I have the following (and working order):
M Sport Steering Wheel
M Sport Gear Knob
Leather Seats
Puddle Lights
Cruise Control
Parking Sensors
Electric Windows and Mirrors
Aux

The condition of both the interior and exterior (apart from the bumper) are ok.

As mentioned above this is a 2nd car (my second E90 after a horror with a 320si)
Hopefully the issues I have listed above aren't too costly. Most of them I can live with but will need to address the washer and tyre issues first.

Any advice an thoufgts will be great;y appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Washer pump blockage very common - build up of sludge in the bottom of the tanks leads to strainer on pump being blocked.

Relatively easy DIY fix though - on the front drivers side you'll need to remove all the wheel arch liner parts and then the tank slides out. Should take around an hour if you haven't done it before.

Plenty of guides on this site if you search.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I thought as much. Hopefully once we go past the -4 temp here I'll give it a go.

Many Thanks

Hi
Yes it has the auto start/stop button but not working as far as I know.
I’ve not used it since I picked it up so not sure if this is the case.

Thanks

You're lucky then! You don't have to get it programmed off.

Update - Door Issue

Hi All

I have checked the fuses 56 and 57 and neither have blown.
The front Door is the only door that locks/unlocks and the rest are manual.

Is the next option to take it to an auto electrician?

Thanks

Just a though. Have you set the door locks in the idrive just to open the drivers door? I set mine to comfort. Which does them all. Unless i leave the key in the slot and get out through the drivers door. then it only unlocks the drivers door.

Hi

My car doesn't have the idrive function. I don't think I can set the door to lock/unlock any other way.

The internal lock button doesnt unlock the other doors either.

Thanks

Sorry i mislead you. My car doesn't have idrive. i meant to say by pressing the BC button on the left stalk while the key is in the slot. You can scroll through to door lock settings and change them to drivers only or all doors

Video here. About 1.27 sec into the video.

Hi
I I have checked these settings and turned the drivers door only to all doors unlocked. But this has still not helped.

Also the internal lock switch only unlocks the drivers door and the boot.

Thanks

Ah pity. Sounds like you need the help of a auto electrical tech.

As a last resort. have you tried disconnecting the battery to reset the systems?

Good luck.

Auto Start Stop function won't work if your battery is getting old. Even with a fresh battery, this time of year it will need long runs to have enough charge for the system to allow Start/Stop.

Hi

Is it best to just remove the negative and plug back in after 10 seconds?

Thanks

Hi
Thanks for that.

I'll give that a go later and will let you know how I get on.

In other news I keep getting a chime for blown rear bulb and Ive checked them all and they all seem intact and not blown.

Thanks

Silly question
But I appear to have a black cover over the negative terminal.
Which I can’t seem to take off.

So I managed to disconnect the battery for around a minute and then plugged it back in. But my door fault remains.
The question is how do I find out which actuator(s) needs replacing?

My fuse numbers are 61, 72, 73 And 79.
73 has a 20amp fuse in it.

Thanks

Update

I thought I'd update on the latest on the car...

I have replaced all 4 tyres.

The humming noise from the rear was a rear driver side bearing which has also been fixed.

I have added a Sony aftermarket HU I took out of my old X3 but currently awaiting delivery of a pioneer which has bluetooth so that will sort all my music connections out. USB and Bluetooth are missing from my setup.

I also installed a set of Vibe Slick 4 on back. but not changed the door speakers so unsure if the sound has improved or not yet.

I will be replacing the front door actuators this weekend seen as I found a set sold by BMW for £65ish as opposed to a lot more for the single door actuator.

Door Actuators Replaced

I finally got round to replacing both the front door actuators.
Now my driver door still locks/unlocks with thekey and from inside.
The two rear doors can only be locked and unlocked manually by pulling the leaver and locking pressing the from inside the car.
The lock button on the centre of the dashboard doesnt have any affect on the rear doors.

On a side note

I replaced my old Sony CD Player with a Mechless Pioneer HU with bluetooth. I ran the 12v switched live to Fuse #2 and connected the red-red and yellow-yellow on the harness. The memory is fine and the cd player only turns on when the key is in the car which saves me having to remember to turn the CD player off like with the Sony HU.

I also fitted some speakers in the doors but not really had chance for a listen as was pushed for time.

Thanks
