Ticking after misfire

Hey all,

So I was planning to do some preventative maintenance to the car since I just bought it (191k kilometers/ 120k miles).

I bought a set of Bosch 332 Spark Plugs & BMW Ignition Coil Bosch OEM 04470 / 94937.

After I replaced the coil packs and spark plugs, I had a misfire on cylinders 3, 4, & 5.

I took the coil packs off and I put back the original ones.
Now my engine has a ticking noise.

Did I fuck up my lifters? This is a terrible way of beginning my bmw career...

No you didn't fuck your lifters up, the ticking will go away with regular driving. Either 3 of your new coils were bunk from the get go or they weren't seating properly.

make sure the coils connectors are plugged in all the way. If I remember correctly they clicked . After I replaced my plugs and coils , I got this misfire on one of the cylinders, swapped the coils with old one and misfired went away. But I noticed the connector on the new coil came out too easily, under closer inspection I noticed that I probably did not have the connector on the coil all the way in . Put the new one back in and no more misfires

I got n54 coils last time where the notch wasn't in the same spot as mine, after notching out all of the coils I realized how far you really have to push them in to get them to connect fully, you don't notice it until you have to go back in and make multiple modifications lol. They most likely just weren't plugged in enough, honest mistake even for me after working on tons of bimmers.

I sold some n54 coils I had because of the notch thing not working on my car. I assume it has a notch for a reason and isn't fully compatible with an N52.

They work great on mine, the plug is the same but they probably just did it because bmw wants you to buy specific coils for each engine.

No, I'm fairly certain the coils are a different design with different specs.

There is nothing wrong with the N52 coils and nothing to be gained by running N54 coils. Just stick with the base coils and find something else to worry about.

Sold my Z4/ N52 with 200k + miles on it, with original coils.

My N54, not so lucky. 4 coils down two to go. 60k

I heard otherwise. Either way its no different than modifying R8 coils to fit an n54, so on and so forth. They work well with my n52 and I saved money because they were on sale, I'm happy with them and can't say I don't recommend it to anyone else.

It happened again....

So the replacement Bosch Coils are made from Slovenia, with the end digits model 470. I bought ANOTHER-6 to try out, assuming that the previous 6 were bad. I ended up getting the same misfire on cylinders 3, 4 & 5.

I unplugged and plugged them back in multiple times. Making sure the clip clicks! Thanks for the confirmation on the 'clicking'.

The grounds on the injectors are clean.
So... I'm not sure what the heckems is wrong...

The current Bosch Coils are made in Germany (I'm not sure if this makes a difference) with end digits model 464. I have purchased another set of 464's and I will try them when they arrive.

I did a bit of reading and the 470's are just supposed to be an updated variant of the 464s. Regardless, I can't imagine that makes a difference but apparently it does for me?

Sounds like you just got some bunk coils from the get go tbh, it happens pretty frequently from a lot of the reviews I read online. I was worried when my new ones were on the way because there were people complaining about it but I didn't have any issue. Fingers crossed for your new set of coils man.

I hope you're right, or else I'll need to trace down some wiring and resistance issues that may be looming. That would be a nightmare....

As for reviews, I thought the 470's had pretty good reviews, but based on this experience, I have been proven wrong.
