Rough idle 3 series 2010

Morning all
Noticed I have a rough idle, thought it was from cold but doing it when warm as well.
Ticks over at about 800 and the Rev needle is up and down.
Don't think it's affecting the car.
If u give a little gas it's fine.
Any ideas?

Excuse me being thick, but from a cold start I agree it could be glow plugs but I've had them checked and all seemed ok but surely when the car is warm the glow plugs are redundant?

Just to clarify rough idle when started cold and warm but when you've been on a run and she's warm u get the idle issue so once started can't see that being anything to do with glow plugs or the module.

It's all random guesswork until you post whatever codes it'll be showing, then it'll just be guesswork based on the relevant codes

In that case either;
1, get yourself Carly or Inpa
2, post on here & ask if anyone local to you has option 1 & will read the codes for you.
3, pay a garage with Bmw diagnostic tool to read your codes
4, pay a Bmw dealer to read the codes
5, replace parts until you get lucky
6, we could all keep guessing until someone gets it right

I'll go with injectors

Any chance people can tell me exactly what diagnosis machines they have, I had a look on eBay at the 2 suggested but they didn't look right and don't want to get something that won't work
Cheers

Carly is an app,

https://www.google.com/url?q=https:/...Mgi0DaxMAzkHqR

Inpa is diagnostic software that you install on your laptop

I did a search for both Carly or Inpa but neither come up with Carly or Inpa in the title of the item.
Bit naive on these things and interested in getting one.

INPA will do pretty much everything you will ever want or need to do on a whole range of BMW's and it is dirt cheap (£30ish if you have a laptop) for the functionality.
The downside is you do need a laptop, an old one is fine running Windows 7 or even XP, and it can be a bit awkward to set up depending on where you source the software.
Carly is very good I understand but I believe that is now on subscription and I know Rasa rates the Foxwell but I have not personally used either of these being an INPA convert many years ago.

I've been looking around and for about £100-£150 you can get them.
I have a very cheap one which I've had a few years and it works ok
My brother has a 2,0 Diesel Mondeo with the engine light on, he booked it into the garage but their diag machine didn't find anything, I plugged mine in and code P2002 came up, not in the book so looked online and it was the DPF. My bro bought one for £15-£20 and same code with DPF came up.
Now I had my rough idle and plugged mine in but it doesn't come up with any codes.
I've had my car mapped and they reckoned that there had been a code killer through as he said my previous issue with smoke in the cabin was DPF but it was actually just a pipe not on the turbo correctly. So with the ECU they restored to factory settings but as I say nothing is being picked up with my reader even though the revs go up and down.
So should I
1. be concerned that nothing comes up
2. Be concerned that it finds nothing on the reader and there's an issue
3. Be worried that the ecu isn't working correctly
4. Not be worried at all.

I think you can dismiss 1 and 4 straight away.

It is unlikely to be 3 which leaves 2.

Generic code readers sometimes work sometimes they do not. It is pot luck which codes they can read on which vehicles.

Unfortunately for us, OBDII codes were forced upon manufacturers many years back in an attempt to keep on top of tighter and tighter emission control regulations.

As cars became more complex, manufacturers took it upon themselves to include considerable quantities of diagnostic information but there is no standardised protocol and each manufacturer to a greater or lesser extent has its own favourite way of accessing and presenting the available information.

With a fault like yours you will need a BMW specific reader that can interpret the subtleties of the manufacturer codes to steer you in the right direction so you either have to bite the bullet and buy a known suitable reader or take the car to someone with the equipment to read it for you.

Incidently I have just searched a certain internet auction site and they have INPA preloaded onto a bulletproof laptop with cables all ready to plug into your car and the current bid is 99 pence!

Ok so this morning there are 4 bids on it and it is now at the princely sum of £2.20 but if it goes for anything around the £150 mark that you have been looking at it is probably a good buy.

Just so that you are aware I have no connection to the seller but it appears to be a painless way to obtain a working INPA system.
