gantry cameras going off like fireworks on the M1 today

On my way up past Junction 26 this morning Nottingham) at 7.30 & saw at least 8 double flashes jumping from lane to lane from the above cameras in the gantry cameras on the opposite direction. It seems the speed limit was restricted to say 50 or 60. I have never seem them flash like this before. This looked like a firework display for the 20 odd seconds they were in my vision. They must have caught 100's

Coming back the other way in same area & the other side had a speed restriction & again loads & loads of flashes.

I travel this stretch quite a bit & don't recall seeing a single flash before and everyone must have carried on at 70 ignoring the limits.

Be careful at speed restricted gantry's.

If they are displaying a speed the camera should be active also.
But as you approach the gantrys, look on the opposite carrigeway you can see the cameras attached to the gantry on the opposite side, that means there is some on the gantry along side it on your side.

I live at j28 of the m1 I use the motorway quite abit, just slow down through them wheel the speed is displayed! I never trust the cameras even if they are off to be honest!

I use the M1 from J28 to J23 and back Mon to Fri but I'm about 45mins before you in the morning. I don't think I saw any flashes this morning, I hope I didn't anyway.

Just posted this in another thread:

Fucking M1 cameras now in action!!!

Fucking bullshit. I was travelling northbound near Luton about an hour ago (midnight). Hardly any traffic and i'm cruising at 65mph (yes 65 was feeling tired and lazy). Then i see 40mph written on the electronic displays. I'm thinking meh whatever, but then I see the driver in front get flashed so slam the brakes but still get flashed!! What the fuck WHY THE HELL DO WE HAVE TO DO 40MPH AT MIDNIGHT WITH NO TRAFFIC OR LANE CLOSURES???

Fucking hell

You know what, I've always ignore these things even when I knew which ones had cameras on the back, but I'm hearing more and more about them being active. I'll pay more attention.

Yeah I travel from 27 to 24 daily and have seen this a few times.

But not quite as many as you. I always stick to the speed displayed.

There are a few forum members in and around Nottingham then?

I recall hearing on the news a while back that the something to do with the text or the display of the speed limit sign wasn't approved so maybe now they are.

Cheers for the heads up OP..

Our Tom Tom knows which gantries have cameras on, so it only beeps & countsdown for the correct gantries, and in any case you can see the bottom of the camera boxes before you get to the gantry.

I run past at a GPS speed 5mph over the limit (as cameras measure real speed not car speedo speed), so the car says about 10mph over the limit. no problems.

Same as average speed SPECS zones, if the limit is 50 then you can do a steady real 55 OK, which is 60 on your speedo, so you pass everyone.

Again the Tom Tom know the SPECS average zones and it displays your average speed in a pop up window so you can always drive fast enough to keep your average to the limit +5.

Do you guys think i'd get much of a chance if i contested a speed fine on the m1 gantrys? Got flashed doing roughly 50 when it said 40. My argument would be why was the speed limit so low on a motorway.

Personally I am waiting for someone to challenge these limits when they are set way too low and are actually more dangerous than following the speed of the traffic. Accidents are caused by speed deltas, and everyone slamming their breaks on for gantries is far worse than them carrying on through at the speed they are able to travel.

I have seen these things up with different speeds for each lane before [20, 30, 50]! on the M25. So if I swerve across two lanes I won't get a ticket? It feels like you need a camera in your car so you can show this kinda stupidity in court!

J28 myself, must've seen Dan a few times I think.

Unless something's changed, stick to the limit when the signs are lit, but I've never worried about it when they are not. well sticking to 2 digits anyway, no more. Not had a ticket yet.

I went in to Nottm off J26 at about 10:45 and they were lit up.

True i do admit to doing that. Surely i can say i was on a free open motorway with no traffic/collisions. I'm hoping they might let me off.

Djgandy: I'll wait and see what comes through the post. I just think its absolutely ridiculous to set a limit at 40mph on a motorway at midnight with no traffic. Even the roadwork areas get a 50 average speed check!!

Ah, maybe not then - seen a Le Mans blue with the anthracite wheels that I thought was you because of your avatar, the guy keeps having a crafty look so I wondered if he was an enthusiast :-D

White E91, black wheels, black grills, debadged.
