Downloading contacts into car's bluetooth?
I successfully paired my phone with my car's bluetooth today; however, I am unable to download my contacts or get the car to sync properly with my phone. In order to get the car to dial a number I have to input the number into the car manually, which is obviously more work than simply using my phone.
Does anyone know how to get the car to download my contact list? From the brief amount of research I've done so far it appears that there are different versions of bluetooth and android that have to be compatible with one another. Given that my car is a 2007, I'm wondering if perhaps it needs an update of its bluetooth software? Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the voice dial feature or trying to access the contact list through your head unit or iDrive?
If you're trying to use voice dial, you have to manually program contacts. |

I've tried using both the head unit (car doesn't have idrive) and voice command functions. When I push any button on the head unit, it acts like it is searching for something but then just goes back to the homepage. If I try using voice command is says phonebook empty.
I've seen other people download their contact list into their car's bluetooth system automatically and I don't understand why I cannot do so with mine. I'm thinking there must be some kind of incompatibility issue between the car and the phone.

what kind of phone do you have? I've got an LG "basic" phone and my wife has an iphone 3, and neither one will download contacts. We finally just gave up, and either dial from the phone or else use one of a few numbers we programmed into the voice dialing.
No phone I know of works with the built-in voice dialing, but many WILL download contacts to the car. You have to scroll through them or select on screen, if you have idrive, to use them. Can't voice dial -- to use that, you have to go through the dialog drill in the car. |

CD, I have an LG Ally. I'm really surprised your wife's iPhone doesn't work with it since that's supposed to be the phone to use w/ BMW Bluetooth.
I'm pretty convinced that there's a software incompatibility problem. I was checking around BMW.com and they show you how you can download a software update onto a flash drive and plug it into the car but your car has to come equipped with a USB plug-in--which mine doesn't have. I tried calling BMWUSA and they referred me to the dealership where I bought the car. I'm thinking my only recourse at this point is to contact them and see if they can help me.

I have an iPhone. The contact list is downloaded and accessed through the headunit. I had to program voice contacts myself.
If you can't access your wife's contact list on the head unit, than something is wrong. |

Both phones pair fine, just no contact download. It **may** have something to do with having multiple contact lists under the "main" one -- she keeps the contacts file in Outlook on her laptop and just syncs the phone. However, she is not willing to give up that feature just to get the phone to work in the car. |

I'm not sure, I do think you need a UBS port in your car though, that's why I didn't go ahead and do the download. All I have in my car is that Aux In jack. I was thinking maybe I could find an adapter or something, but first I'm going to try the dealer and see if they can help.

I have USB in mine. The AUX 3.5mm jack won't do you any good, can't move files through that type of port.

In order for the contacts to sync you gotta have 2 things:
1) Your phone has to have bluetooth 2.0 or later. Before my iPhones I had a Samsung flip phone. My family all had the same phone and mine was replaced under warranty with a newer version that had BT 2.0 and would sync the contacts. The rest of my family with pre BT 2.0 phones would only be able to sync the phone, not the contacts. 2) Your car has to have a production date after 3/2007 (I'm not 100% sure on the date). BMW updated the BT module for the 2008 model and I believe some of the 2007 ones. According to Real OEM there are what looks like 4 different BT modules that a 2007 could have had (http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...13&hg=84&fg=95). I also found an article on the Apple support site where someone mentioned that BMW was changing BT modules around the 2007 time frame (https://discussions.apple.com/message/6559582#6559582) So my guess is even if you have a BT 2.0 phone, you probably have an older BT module that can't support the syncing of contacts since your car is a 2007MY. Oh, one more thing.... GO NOLES!

Hey now. That's not nice considering all the looking into it that I did for you But then I think of 31-7 and I get all happy again
Are you going to try to pick up a new module so you can get the contacts to pair?

i have a 330 e90 build date 7/05. and no idrive. Lg vu would sync but not contacts. nokia e72 did sync contacts both new phone is a nokia e73 and it also sync contacts as well. i believe has more to do with phone than with module, as i have never gotten any type of software update. try a newer smart phone to test this theory. the voice command phonebook has to be programmed separately.

I'm going to take it into the dealership and see what they recommend. If I have to get a new module then I will.
