17" wheels that fit a 335d

I'm eyeing up some smaller wheels for winter. I definitely need some as I drive to west wales in winter.

I saw some used 157 bmw wheels, not the nicest looking but nice isn't important. will these fit over the brakes?

Are there any bmw wheels that won't fit so I can cross them off the shortlist.

Thanks!

I just so happen to have some 17" 335i SE wheels (Style 188) that I'll be advertising soon. I'm just waiting for the car sale to go through next weekend and I'll put some pics up once I've cleared some space and got them out. I got them last winter for mine but never got round to getting winter rubber for them. If you can wait, they might be ideal for you.

Might be worth checking with your insurance company that they are fine with this.

I've just moved from an E90 335d to an A4 3.0 quattro. Audi have launched an official winter tyre and wheel package (as have BMW) and I decided to take advantage of a pre-order offer. By chance, I called my insurance company - The AA (underwritten by Allianz). I explained what I wanted to do and they said they would have to check with Allianz.

20 mins later, I get a call back telling me that changing to winter wheel and tyres is a "modification" and Allianz will not cover me. The AA (as brokers) sourced me another quote with a different underwriter - my premium would be raised from £390 to £900.

After double checking that they understood I was planning to change from 19" alloy wheels to cheaper 17" wheels with safer tyres for the winter months, it made no difference. They still would not insure me.

Fuming, I decided to check out Audi's own insurance offering. I was disappointed to find that it was also underwritten by Allianz. However, a very helpful Audi Insurance person did the necessary investigations, liaised with Allianz, asked pertininent questions about rolling radius size differences and whaddya know? - very slightly cheaper insurance and the green light to change my wheels in Winter and change back in Spring. There is a general ignorance within the insurance industry about the winter/wheel tyre programmes now available.

You may think it's hyper cautious to check this type of thing with your insurance company, but much better to find their stance on this before you make the change rather than during a claim that you might have once they're on the car.

Why did you change from a 335d to a 3.0 audi?

Long long long story, but a number of factors influenced my decision.

I'd done 70k miles in the 335d, was in extended warranty, had some recurring issues and fancied a change.

I nearly went for the same again, but the timescales over the new 3er, the lack of action/news on the 306bhp 4.0d for the E90 and the fact I needed 4 new tyres made me look around.

Last winter, I drove an A4 3.0td quattro with winter tyres on around the north of Scotland in relentless snow and ice for 2 weeks - I was flabbergasted by the performance of the car and tyres. Given I have much travelling to do in Northern Europe over the next few years (and winters), I thought I'd give it a go.

At some point, I'll prob do a write up of the differences between the cars and my experience of them.

Also looking at these for winter

Style 157 - not staggered so plenty of winter tyre options too...

But dont think they were for a 335 - they have an inner lip/ridge so not sure if they will fit over the brakes?

Not very popular on here but I love my non staggered 17s. Like the way they "dish" nicely. Looks quite cool from an angle.

Apologies for the rusty disks - I'd just washed it!

Forgive me but I'm clueless about wheels, sizes etc.

I have an insurance company to please and an extended warranty to abide by.

I have to get OEM wheels, fine by me.

Now, I have my eye on some OEM 17s that are 225/45/17 all round. I would have to use that size to keep everyone happy. However, e92s always have lower profile rears. I don't know why this is, so my question is, can I put 45 profile tyres on all round to keep everyone happy or is there something specific about the rear suspension or arch clearance or speedo calibration that means I will have to use lower profile 40s on the rear. And is it possible to use lower profile rears when the rim spec states a 45 should be used.

Sorry for the newbie questions, have no idea about this stuff and don't want to invalidate anything.

It would only be a lower profile rear tyre if you were putting wider tyres on the back. So using 225/45/17 all around is exactly what you want.

If you have a wider rear tyre they need to be a lower aspect ratio to keep the same rollling radius as the front (the 'profile' number in a tyre size is actually called the aspect ratio)

The profile (aspect ratio) is a % of the width, so a for example a 225/40 is the same rolling radius as a 255/35.

You need to pick a width and aspect ratio that matches a standard size to ensure the correct reading of your speedo etc.

Your example is perfect, 17" x 8J rims would used a 225/45/17 size as listed as an OE size - all round would be fine.
