When you update the maps (via usb), then this only updates the maps inside the cic, it does not update the firmware thats running on the cic.

Imagine that the cic is a computer running windows 7 and that the map is "word" is running 2020.

Updating "word" to 2022 does not update windows to windows 10.

They are two separate things.

To upgrade the maps you use a usb and a FSC code, takes approx 20min thats it.

To Upgrade the cic firmware, you need in icom and the flash files, this takes approx 2 hours.
Ah, i've misunderstood your post then, as "If you load c16 you wont need the fsc, if you load c1a you will need the fsc code for the aps etc" reads like if you're running C16 then a map update won't ask for FSC, but if you run C1A you will be asked.

Sorry could be my explanation...

There are several FSC inside the cic.

There are 3 for the navigation alone, 1 for navigation (fsc 17), 1 for map certification(fsc 1b) and 1 for map activation(fsc 28).

The app (fsc 19) has 1, if you have c1a then your require the FSC from BMW, this will need to be input via ISTA, FSTools or DrGini, I dont think you can actually type it in.

If you have the older c16 on the cic then you can just code apps on the cic and not need the 19 FSC cert.

Late reply, but, for anybody reading: worth trying the USB route anyway. The maps on mine update fine via USB, even though I've not got the icons on that screen.

(Can't remember offhand exactly what's there or what isn't on my car! But I posted about this on another old thread as well: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1628358)

I paid the dealers to do mine, which I was glad in the end as it took 2.5 days as it kept crashing not sure how that would pan out at an Indy.

I didn't really notice anything extra to be honest, postcode search was about it.[/QUOTE

I dont think you do, if you have CIC you have to update by mem stick. I don't have the tick either so I phoned BMW parts dept and asked for a DVD to update the nav while explaining that i had CIC but no tick and they said no you have to update by mem stick, that'll be £85 please.

I used the update shared on here and it installed without problem.

After updating the map, i can jow input the full postcode when searching for an address. I went from 2009 maps to 2019.
Did you just plug and play? I also dont have the tick, but it won't read the usb I have for the maps update. It's an 02/09 E90 and when I plug in the USB, nothing happens, so wasn't sure if I needed a DVD to update it. Sorry, I know your reply is from a few years back, so you may not remember!

Yeah I just plugged the usb in and it initiated itself from what I remember. The USB has to be formatted in fat32 though of the car won't recognise it and start the upload.
