Yes you can splice fiber optic cables to repair them but you need special splicers and special tools to ensure the light inside the fiber is aligned.

Honestly it is probably cheaper to replace the entire harness it is a part of than it is to get all the tools to splice and/or repair that...

How much are the tools. And I would rather replace the entire harness but having a hard time locating where they go. So far I've traces a set of wires near the driver side under the carpet. How much further do you think they go?

Probably easier to buy a new cable.
Probably easier to buy a new cable.
Where does that end plug in. Or if you do not have CDC there may be some extra cables for pre wiring already in the car and not used for 09 an earlier models.(that you can use to replace it) How did you discover this what part of the car is it coming from and what kind of sound system do you have. It would be normal for light to shine on only one side as the other side is the return loop. A pin on the connector housing frees the two cable for removal then only the damaged one needs replacing. Read about the most bus in the following pdf all the lines come together in a routing block under the Passanger seat Bolster on Drivers Side (US ) See page 26 to 29 first document. electical e90 pdf http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.cGU&cad=rja http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...85464276,d.cGU http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...85464276,d.cGU Are you in the US? Splicing Fiber Optic is not cheap, and the tools for it are even more expensive.
I was a PM for an electrical contractor that did some fiber splicing. Our splicing machines were $10k a piece... We did industrial type splices though so not sure what smaller splicers would cost, but im guessing in the $2-3k range. However, it isnt too bad to pay for a splice considering the cost of tools for a fiber splice. Ask the dealer and see what they charge. Or call up some fiber companies and see if they would consider helping you. |

yeah, it's pretty easy, actually. we do it all the time. you just need a clean cut, some new pins, and a connector.

Don't know why you attempt to splice those way cheaper to buy a new one.
Not cool to bring a thread back from the past from 5 years or more ago. What is your actual problem with the car? What year is it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/231998192495 Last edited by ctuna; 10-10-2021 at 10:36 PM.. |

Well, i occasionally need to repair optical cables at work and they are really simple. Just a silica or plastic tube that transports light.
We even have machine to measure light attenuation (dBm) after mending them. So i've had fair bit of experimenting with them. Anyways there are cutters like this: https://i-fiberoptics.com/tool-detai...24&cat=cutters Essentially it is just razor sharp blade that cuts through fiber. However the small hole makes sure damage is not spread but stays in very small region (proper positioning) and while using the handheld tiny tool it makes sure you make one clean cut. What i'd do in this situation. Get new razor blade. Inspect how far fiber is from connector end, document it or do an image. Remove fiber from connector. Use very sharp razor blade and place it on the optical cable. Use hammer on the razor blade and don't apply much force but the goal is to make one clean cut splicing the cable. Hit the razor with the hammer and you've successfully removed broken part of fiber. Next get 2000 grit sandpaper, get it wet. Do wax-on type of round movements with the recently cutted fiber end on the sandpaper. Keep it horizontally while sanding, occasionally inspect work until fiber end is very smooth (this step depends of good of a cut was made initially). Inspect results, if good put optical fiber back into the connector. Total cost = 1 razor blade + sandpaper. Probably less than 3$. You can use any object as a hammer so hammer cost doesn't count. You've saved money and environment of another plastic piece of rubbish that probably ends up in India huge wasteland. |

I have a 2013 x5 35d and two of my green most bust cables where damaged in the cargo area. I’ve cut them all and have a clean slice and everything I bought all the recommended parts. But having trouble with the optical
Waveguide socket part # (61 13 6 906 554) Going into the optical waveguide connector part number (61 136 906535). I would buy new optical waveguide cables But wouldn’t it have to be green and not orange. |
