Hey guys.

Just went through my normal daily routine of driving the car upto my gargage. (e92)

I applied the handbreak as normal, got out to open the garage door and the car started rolling back.

My wife was in the passenger seat and pulled up on the handbreak but it was already fully on (as I left it)

I tried to jump back in the car to hit the foot break but didnt make it in time.

The car rolled back right into my garage door hitting the handle, smashing the handle and making a mess out of the bumper.

Its booked in for Monday at BMW service center but I'm worried BMW wont find a fault and wont take responsibility and i'll be stuck with a messed up bumper.

Has anyone else has this problem.

Help....PLEASE!

BMW will not find fault. They had no fault in it. You can either pay out of pocket or go through insurance

Good luck with this issue. I don't recall other reports of faulty handbrakes (you may want to do a ).

Did you try to test the handbrake again to confirm functionality?

I don't like to yank on the p brake too much myself, and I was surprised once at a supermarket that when I put my foot on the clutch, the vehicle rolled backwards....

I guess I got this habit from stuck calipers on my other car and having the pistons not release fully.

Anyway, agree that dealership wont be responsible for the subsequent/consequential damage, but insurance would cover...

How is it not? I would reasonably assume that a parking brake would keep the car parked. If however it's discovered that there's nothing wrong with it, then I'd be at a total loss of words.

Over time they need to be adjusted. I'm reasonably sure they also say you need to leave the car in gear (with engine off obviously) when parking it.

If something broke I could see them potentially paying for it but, if it just needed to be adjusted the owner should have been aware of that.

I do see your point but they will argue it because it says in the manual to park it in gear with a 6mt

This car has only covered 5k miles. I do this at least once a day and it has never happened before.

There was a 'clunk' sound when I moved the car forward and the handbrake worked fine straight afterwards.

I know BMW will almost certainly find no fault and I have no way of proving what happened.

I was hoping enough people had suffered the same or similar problem with the brake to reasure me of the fault.

Is it possible that the handbrake handle can be fully engaged but the brakes not engaged?

before you go to bmw, find a hill and put it in neutral and apply the parking brake and test the brake to see if it will hold the car. the handbrake on my car is worthless unless i have it completely up, and i've already had to have the brakes replaced twice because they kept rubbing so i went through a set of brakes in like 2 weeks which was pretty amazing because i hardly ever use the brake because i use m mode to slow me down and use the brakes for the last ~5mph.

Sorry to hear that. You should always park your car in gear or reverse depending of the slope of the hill. Had my TSX roll down about 30 feet at the dealership before almost out into a major highway. Sheet luck that it slowed down when the road leveled and that it didn't hit anyone or a pole. That's when I learned to always leave it in gear .

Sorry to hear, yeah definitely you can't always be aware of the practicality of keeping things up to date. Come on people, give this guy a brake. No pun intended.

This definitely BMW's fault if as he stated the hand brake failed. Handbrake does require retuning now and then but BMW's free maintenance program should cover that. If they overlooked the interval required then it's BMW's fault.

As OP stated, he did pull the handbrake, and even with car in gear your car can still roll.

If you re-tested the parking brake immediately afterward and it worked, there has to be some user error involved somewhere.

Try to replicate the car moving with the hand brake fully engaged. If you can replicate this, you might have a case at the BMW dealer, otherwise i think you are out of luck on this one. Sorry

I'd argue it. I've driven a manual for 10 years and always left it in neutral with the parking brake up and never had a problem.

You ALWAYS should park a manual-shift transmission in gear. Never leave it in neutral if the engine is off. If the car is on level ground or facing uphill at all, then park it in 1st gear. And if it is facing downhill, then park it in reverse.
