Question CIC hard drive dead, how do I fix this?

Hey, a few weeks back my CIC started to reboot every 30 seconds to a minute. From what I have gathered this means that the CIC is able to boot off of the flash drive, but when it is trying to access the hard drive it finds a corrupt file, causing the system to reboot.

I am having some difficulties finding a solution to this problem besides bringing the car into BMW and having them replace the CIC unit. I know there are some aftermarket kits for CCC to CIC, but I can not find anyone willing to sell just the CIC unit pre-programmed or even better just a hard drive to replace the faulty component.

I know that other people must have dealt with this issue already, does anyone have any useful information or know a source to buy just a coded hard drive or CIC unit.

Thanks! I hope someone can help me solve this PITA issue.

On other forums I have read about people cloning the hard drive of a donor car and using the clone to replace the failing drive.

This screws up the FSC codes for navigation and some other features, but otherwise it is reported to work.

So if I am able to pull the FCS codes from my hard drive, I can just clone another hard drive and then just insert my old FCS codes? Is there anyway to order a pre coded hard drive?

There were some threads about people going to solid state drives.

I've been reading those threads, but that is just a direct clone without any changes, since this would be the hard drive from another car I think I would have to change the FCS codes at least?

Yes but if you can do that it is likely your drive has not failed already.

You would the be best off cloning it to a new drive.

I forget what Unix variant is used for the drive partitions. They are not standard..

I don't think BMW will sell you a just a drive with the proper FSC codes.

CIC uses QNX

FSC is no problem. Just activate via script if FSC lost.

Or just use the CIC patcher - even easier.

Yes. I didn't mention this as I was under impression CIC needed to be running the latest firmware? Can be more of a hassle for some people.

Or maybe my info is out of date. I've never actually used CIC Patcher.

Yeah that's true, I think it has to be on the latest firmware. I know they were supposed to eventually release the source code, in which case I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to modify it for older firmwares.

The original type of disk drive can be purchased on eBay for about $20. I bought some spares, but I need to clone the drive before it fails.
