Cool :: BMR Autowerkes :: 330d Tuning *Dyno inside*

Super excited to finally post results on this!

We've been experimenting with tunes & piggybacks on the BMW 3.0 litre diesel platform for a little while and while there have been some good products, we don't reckon they have been 'great'. Well we have finally found a great option.

Will let the dyno results below speak for itself. This is an ECU tune (not piggyback), drives smoothly, 100% safe, no detriment to fuel economy all conditions being equal.

The vehicle below is a BMW E93 330d with the N57 engine, found in E90s, E92s, X5, X6 etc.

KW
Stock: 153.0kw
Tuned: 203.2kw
Gain: 50.2kw

Torque
Stock: 451nm
Tuned: 522nm
Gain: 71nm peak, or 130nm @ 3,500rpm

Other notes:
- where the stock torque curve starts to drop off around the 105km/h mark on the X-axis, the tuned torque curve keeps climbing until the ~120km/h mark
- additional torque and power available right from downlow so the car absolutely punches off the line and builds power right through the low and mid range.

Looks like some good results you have there! I am particularly interested as im one of the few 330d owners .

I'm currently have a DTUK piggy back on mine and am pretty impressed with it so far, but have never put it on a dyno to check what the actual difference is.

All the piggyback/ECU guys note the same advantages to kw/torque but wouldn't trust many of them without actually testing it.

Shame im not in Sydney! would love to drop past with mine!

Nice! Now, can you guys get to tuning a N52 323i/325i engine? Damn those 125i engines.

I've used a few DTUK boxes in the past and dyno'd them on a 330d, car went from mid 150s stock to low 180s - still a good result for a piggyback, I'll see if I can dig up the dyno sheet.

Any chance u found the dyno for the DTUK piggyback?

What map setting was the DTUK and was it +10% or +20%

I would assume the test vehicle is an 330d LCI with factory figure of 180kw (245hp)? Dyno stock figures seems low for that engine so I wasn't sure if it was the 160kw or 180kw 330d.

Last but most important question, U got any installers in Brisbane?

The car we used above is definitely the 180kw version.

153kw at the wheels indicates drivetrain loss of 15% which is right where we would expect it.

I will go dig up the DTUK dyno sheet.

+1 if you can get it

Im running mine on programme 3 with +2 (20%?) on it. Haven't varied much off prog 3 as from my reading into it that seems to be what everyone lands on.

Stuart, have you done any other tinkering with the 330d by any chance? looking for some ideas :P

Ok got the dynos with power/torque. Unfortunately don't have AFRs for them but that would have made a good comparison as well.

First dyno, Car made 164.5kw stock (so a bit better than our example above!)
Second dyno, DTUK box with +20% made 178.6kw
Third dyno, overlaid with our 'proper' flash tune, albeit two different cars.

I thought it might have be the 180kw version since there is no pre-lci 330d with 160kw sold in Australia. So the DTUK Dyno suggested that the box only pumped out and extra 14kw only at 20% which is equivalent to 8.5% increase on that test vehicle. Your recent dyno with your remap is actually 33% increase base on 50.2kw. Wow.... that is crazy.

I have being looking at a remap for my 330d and so far I have come across these tuning option in Brisbane.
DMS is 23% Through HP performance
Superchip is 18% Though Peter James
Evolve-Technik is 16% Through their QLD dealer in Yatala

Your remap is by far the most powerful one for sure. Got me worried if it is too much for the engine and drive train.

Any installer in Brisbane? Extended warranty is about up for me. Time for a proper remap

The tune is done to a safe level, there is still headroom there. In our experience the engine and drivetrain can handle the power.
We have tried a more powerful remap as well which was still safe with AFRs in check but it requires a bit more tweaking and dyno time so probably isn't for everyone.
As you can see the main power gain is in the mid range and we taper it off up top so as to not work the turbo too hard.
No installers in Bris currently

Impressive numbers. Shame we never got the 330d E91, would have considered it.

I thought the diesel engine was fairly bomb proof anyway. With a compression ratio of 16.5 has to be built a bit stronger.
