Did this last night and this morning the pug was back in. I do have a slight hole in one of the welds (will get fixed when I install the Dimisa tips) but I just found the car sounded like a Corsa.

To say that once the car is warmed up the flap stays open is I'm afraid rubbish. I suggest you drive behind your car sometime and see where the exhaust fumes come from most of the time. The flap opens up at start up and then shuts again, then once the revs rise the flap does open. If you can't get to drive behind your car then just notice how much dirtier the right pipe is when you wash the car, it's open all the time where as the left one is only part time

When I got the car 2 years ago, I wondered if it was OK after the 545i and asked the service department to check it. They said it was normal for it to be open all the time when hot.

No need to drive behind myself (and unless you have a big problem you can not see the fumes when the car is warmed up), I can just stand behind it as it ticks over and feel there is no discernable difference from either pipe when warm. When cold everything out of just the one.

Can you PM me some of the actual steam?

Photo's can be faked. I've heard that the one of you in your van might even have been mocked up by our forum moderator.

It's a vicious rumour, NFS- Carl knows very well that shot of him in his little red van was sent in by his mum, after she took it, a couple of weeks ago.

As for the 'exhaust steam', well...

The flap is there for a few reasons...

1) Warm the cats up a bit quicker
2) Increase back pressure at low revs to improve economy
3) Reduce exhaust noise for the EU numb nutts

The flap opens and closed at different times depending on throttle position and revs. It doesn't stay open all the time once the engine is warmed up, this was the same on all my previous cars... my Porsche 996 with PSE, my B6 Audi S4 (before I fitted Millteks), 535d and now on our 130i.

I recently put the vacuum tube back on the 130 as it does make motorway speeds slightly more noisy, but my wife has said "why is my car so quiet... put it back to being loud!" [good girl!]

Now... I don't own a 335i... so I'm not going to make a bold statement and say it's the same.... BUT !

My 535d had one on the rear silencer..... made feck all difference fixing it open, so I stuck the hose back on. Couldn't hear the exhaust over the noise of the engine with the window down

Have you looked at the rear silencers? On the 130, you can't see the flap from looking down the tail pipes, where as on the 535d and S4 you could see the flap. Audi removed the flap on the B7 S4, so maybe BMW have done the same for the newer x35i/d's ?

lol Viv is on the ball aint he!!! took all of 30secs min for him to remove that

when u look down the pipes of the dxb does she have a flap? if it doesnt it might explain why the mufflers have a diff part number to the 335i then? IIRC on mine b4 i zip-tied it you could defnitely hear a metallic clunk when it warmed up and it the flaps opened
