I'd like to thank @kentgbr for DIY info. I was able to modify my LCI sport wheel so my left paddle only down shifts and my right paddle only up shifts (push or pull for both).

Just did this on my 335i with the M-Sport wheel. I did it without removing the airbag. Just pry up the top right corner on the left side of the trim piece to pop it over the airbag then the whole trim piece comes out easy. Honestly the hardest part was removing the 3-pin connector for the shifter from the wheel control switchbox. Really have to pull on it. I did Mod 1, just popped out Pin 1 from the 3-pin connector and used one of those 1 wire IDC (insulation displacement connector) to join wire 1 and wire 3 together. Took me all of 10 minutes....

I did the option 2 - and it's very easy indeed, no need to the airbag off. Love the mod!

I used the video above, I also went on YouTube and found these two which helped show how to take the steering surround cover off without having to remove the airbag

I’m sure there are a few videos on this procedure on the Internet but I found these 2 quite helpful.

It’s a little bit more involved than some people here seem to imply.

The wiring is very tight to the switch on the right hand side.

As you try to pull the cover off I found it easier to find the little catch at the top (that is explained in one of the above videos) and gently push down on it with a screwdriver whilst trying to ease the cover off. You’ll work it out!

Also the wires are very tight. They don’t just put out on a set of pliers, I had to gradually take the small socket switch apart with small screwdrivers and ease the wires out. I really didn’t want to break anything.

However, once the mod is done, it’s brilliant!

Just did this yesterday, only on the left paddle, it was a real pain to get the connector out, after that, just unluck the clip on the wire pins.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the great instructions/links above. Completed mod 3 without removing the airbag and just swapping the pins (felt this was the least invasive/most easily reversed option). The top clip on each side of the trim was the only tricky part, needed a bit more force to release with but it eventually came free.
