Oh god here we go again diseasel in his 330d is better than 335d argument again.

Get over yourself mate, I've owned both and driven the LCI 330d and they are NOT a match for the 335d, and as much as you argue it they never will be!!!

The 335d will never be an M3 and believe it or not there are some enthusiasts out there who don't want an M3, me being one of them, been there done that and have no intention of returning, for two reasons, no M3 tourer and silly MPG, so your argument of feeling inferior to an M3 doesn't stack up either.

You obviously haven't been in Aberdeen then, where there are numerous 09/59/10/60/11/61 plate e92 335d m sports running around!!

If you look back at my posts over the years, I've never "dissed" anyone who achieves good MPG from a 335d, i do however comment that the owner does "not" drive it hard when the owner goes onto comment they do aswell as achieving the good MPG. They may squeeze the throttle every so often.. But they don't drive it "Hard".

Wow where is this thread going.

Doesn't matter which way you cut it, the 335d can be quick and economical. But as pointed out people don't drive it hard, myself included. Im not ashamed to admit I don't have the skill or the balls to drive it on the limit, I've said this before and nobody has ever ridiculed me for this... As Carl said, he has far more experience than I do and I wouldnt pretend otherwise or dispute his economy claims.

I drive it hard, I take it right through the rev range but this isnt nessecarily on the limit driving. perhaps my increased mpg over others here comes from awareness and different roads, as Pete pointed out.

It's not a pissing contest I get what I get and I drive how I drive and I enjoy the car, I didnt buy it for economy, the economy is a bonus. I dont care if the 335i is faster or slower, it ain't my car but facts are important and shouldn't be disputed or ignored.

335D all day long - its got twin exhausts, which gets you in slags knickers 1.4 minutes faster than the 330's single puffer*

I kept the point to diesel as that was the point.

ref your point about an M3, that's why i didn't get a 335i. At least now I can lie and say I desperately wanted a diesel. ;-)

The M3 owner shouldn't have got an M5 because he wanted a 3 series, and the M5 owner shouldn't have got a Bentley because he wasn't a footballers wife

Did you even see the second part of my response where I suggested a 320d ED as a happy medium or had the red mist descended by then?

To the OP

I honestly dont think any car can be driven fast with and regularity and be economical, and ive had a few cars to judge this from. So heres a few examples:-

My 335d did 26.6mpg on average and never reached 40mpg

My 130i (manual) im driving at the moment gets 24.7 on average and yesterday driving at 70mph (with no overtaking at all) coming home from a night away in blackpool (Chubby Brown was awesome BTW) i got an indicated 38.1mpg but as soon as i start driving normally itll go back to 24.7 in no time at all.

My c350cdi Blue Eff estate averaged 31mpg and someone on here is getting 35mpg they must be driving with a light foot AND doing mainly motorway because its not possible to get both in that car.

My M6 averaged 10.7 mpg on a long motorway trip the best i ever saw was 23 but the second you used ANY throttle at all it plummeted to 15 even on a motoway doing 75.

Im quite sure that if you drove in an incredibly controlled manner then high MPG in a 335d is possible but i do not believe that it can be both driven fast AND be economical at the same time.

So in reality if i was mainly doing motorway miles i wouldnt bother with a large engine any more as when you doing 75-80 youd can tell the difference in a 318 or a 335d. The only reason to buy the 335d would be emotional to say look at me this is what i own, if thats your main purpose then go for it and enjoy it However IMO If economy is more important look elsewhere, as there is nothing so pointless as having a powerful car and driving it like a nun to get decent fuel economy.

I totally agree, my figures are about the same as yours Steve.

Also, do the maths and work out the cost differences between driving it hard and getting 31mpg and driving it like Miss Daisy and getting 35mpg, I do less miles these days, down from around 40k to maybe 25k and 25k a year just doesn't save me all that much money by trying to be economical. Don't get me wrong I am not talking about hammering it everywhere, just driving without trying to save fuel all the time.


£85 week at 35mpg
£96 week at 31mpg

My car is loosing £120 a week, insurance is £25 a week, servicing around another £10 a week and tyres about the same.
If I am loosing that much I am not going to get stressed over trying to save £5-10 a week on fuel.

Actually its the 330d that's sounds rougher than a 335d.

As steve said driving like a granny will give good MPG out of a 335d.

I once to prove a point achieved 57 but it was a painful 8 miles.

When I said the 335d can fast and economical I didn't mean at the same time, I meant it could do either if you tried.

Either way I still think the 36 MPG I'm getting average is very economical for this car. I do tend to drive longer trips which make a difference.

I've come to the conclusion that many drivers believe they drive hard when they really drive quite briskly, perhaps accelerating hard and keeping up quite high average speeds. So different than using all the performance, most of the time. As I've said of myself, I drive briskly, use the full range of performance, BUT most of the time I'm cruising on a very light throttle due to conditions and speed limits.

Look at it logically, you accelerate hard down the slip road (big grin or smile) and then join the flow and cruise. Feels good, but it isn't hard driving, and if you cruise a few miles the mpg average will soon look pretty respectable.

Another factor often overlooked is the amount of braking. The guys who wear out pads in 25k miles are using a lot of energy (fuel), a massive excess compared to the guys who drive/accelerate just as fast and hard, but cruise for miles without needing to brake, and get 60 - 70k miles from a set of pads. It is factors like the above that also swing the mpg figures.

Also remember some choose a car like the 335d not to drive it on the limits all the time, just enjoy the total package and the performance when they need it, such as in safe overtaking moves and the feel of the engine.

I didn't 'need' a 540i with a 4.4-litre V8 engine, but what a car to drive, even pottering around. It was the refinement, the instant pickup, the whole feel of the car, whether accelerating hard or cruising at sensible speeds.

I agree, to be honest I dont cane the living sh1t out of mine all of the time, mainly because I would be either dead or in prison but that goes for any car. I had a Mini One Diesel as a loaner last week and could easily have ended up rolling a 7 if I'd driven like a pratt the whole time.

Although in the main I drive ok ish (My wife would disagree) I don't get above 27.5mpg but its not an issue. If it was, I wouldnt have bought a car that could cost me the wrong side of £1000 for a repair or more than that for a set of tyres.
