What to use for car polishing?

I have done a bit of can respray on my rear bumper to fix cracks in it and need to do the final polishing. I went over the clear-coat with 1200 grit sandpaper and I believe I need to do some cutting (something aggressive) and then polishing for the final shiny finish? I've never done this before. What do I use? Ideally something from Halfords.

Cheers

By hand you're never going to be able to get a good finish, it will need properly machine polishing.
You may also want to step up from 1200 to 2500 and 3000grit sand paper (wet) first too.

The Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Polish did a very good job, it had no problems getting out the 1200 grit sanding marks. Unfortunately the spray paint from Halfords is nowhere near the colour of the car. My car's black sapphire metallic has this nice blueish shine to it, the Halfords paint is just black, like the dirt in our lawn. Disappointing but it's only a patch on the horizontal area where the bumper meats the bootlid. No one's going to notice.

The paint code on Halfords' website is the same as on my car. To be honest it's probably my painting. In the middle of the patch the colour looks a little bit better but around the edges it looks too black. I think that's where I sprayed-painted over the clear-coat and then clear-coated on top again. In the middle where it is sanded down to plastic the coats go in the correct sequence - primer, paint, clear-coat. Around the edges it's probably - old primer, old paint, old clear-coat, new primer, new paint, new clear-coat. I don't know how to transition from new to old nicely.
