Thumbs down Dynavin vs Kenwood

OK. I have the Dynavin, and have read all of the forums, even solved some of the common problems. Worst $800 I have ever spent. Now I'm worried about selling my 2006 325i with the Dynavin installed because the Dynavin is so crappy. All it is really good for is a radio and even that is debateable. Unfortunately my wife threw out the original BMW parts taken out to install the Dynavin when cleaning out the garage. Either keep your original BMW radio installed or get the Kenwood, pure and simple. The Dynavin is a real PofS (no translation needed). If you are a real idiot and want to look stupid, buy the Dynavin. Your wife will be more than happy to constantly b***tch about the choice. I can guarantee that she will never see the Dynavin as a smart move...Of course, if you are not married, maybe your friends will be a little more forgiving (LOL).

great write up! How do you guys think the Pioneer unit compares?

IMO this is the best looking one. would just switch the placement of it for the climate position..

Yes I agree but it's just not smart having the Nav so low, not even the old benz have it that low

I am considering installing the Kenwood DNX6990HD in my 2009 BMW E90. I am concerned that I may lose the vehicle's warning chimes after the install. Is this true? If so, is there a way to retain the chimes and is there a thread that will help show how to do this? I want to try and keep as many of the vehicle's original functions as possible.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

To do this, you have to retain the factory head unit. I put mine in the trunk below the floor board

That's why I started this thread. It is the biggest joke I have ever experienced as a consumer. How in the world they can sell these units and stay in business is beyond my comprehension

Get the Kenwood.. it's not a bad piece of equipment. at least you will be happy and it is definitely an upgrade for a would be buyer from no nav at all

I did the same thing. I got a new bezel from an outfit in germany and put my climate controls on top of the kenwood. It's not as convenient for looking at nav but it looks so much better and the bezel putting the climate controls on top is much better looking and the whole install looks factory.

My son has the car at college.. i'll take a pic sometime

And for navigation....Yes, it is indeed too low to be looking at it while driving. But i hardly look at it..because the voice instructions are clear and accurate, i dont really have to look at th screen to find out directions.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain on this issue. I have been researching the heck out of this and it seems that your way is the most logical way to install this unit.

I have just taken apart the side panels in the trunk in an attempt to identify my amplifier but to my shock, NO AMP! Could it be that my radio is powering all the speakers on its own? Would BMW have placed the amp elsewhere? I am stumped......I just wanted to see if the amp was a logic 7 or not so I can determine whether or not the install would be possible.

By the way, did you have to purchase a particular mounting bracket for the HU in the trunk?

Someone told me that the "telephone" and "talk" buttons on the steering wheel will not work with the DNX9990. Can you confirm this?

The amp is located inside the HU. I had my head unit mounted in the trunk

No, put HU under the trunk floor into a slot and put foam around it

Steve, I appreciate your time in helping me get better informed. I am now more comfortable about choosing the Kenwood unit. Until I stumbled onto your original post, I was considering the Dynavin unit!.....Thanks for setting me straight! Time to get the ball rolling!

Great thread ... about to do this upgrade on my E90. One question about your newer bezel. Do you have the name of the company or a link?

Great thread. Read it just because when I had dnx6990 in '06 325i... but now I had it installed in a '11 328i and can't find a constant power source for yellow wire from head unit in vehicle so I have to go through the initial setup screen every time I restart vehicle... Anyone know where a constant 'hot' source is located... possibly in fuse box or anywhere???

HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. FINAL STEP FOR COMPLETE INSTALLATION.

Thanks,

newbie to forum

I had the same problem but I quickly solved it. I used the constant for the cigarette lighter in the ashtray. Works perfectly. Before you do this, just make sure that the outlet works when the car is off and the the key fob is out.

I have the 2011 model and there is only an outlet in the armrest which turns off after a while without the key in... I don't have an ashtray or that whole setup though I could benefit from an ashtray.

There are several ways to cross that Logic 7 upgrade bridge.

I'm not a fan of Kenwood user interface, but it's better than the Dynavin. I'd have recommended the 2013 Alpines, we really like their UI.
