5mm Spacers safe for track/Autocrossing

Hello,

I've just received my new wheels and I am currently waiting for my new tires (Federal 595 RS RR 255 square) My wheels are 18x9 ET35 TR Motorsports MT1's and I am a little concerned about the fitment upfront. If need be I was thinking of running a 5mm spacer up front to clean the strut but I am unsure if this would be safe for track use as it takes away 5mm of the hub center that the wheels sit on. There should be 5-6 mm left but that still makes me uneasy. Do any of you guys use 5mm spacers at the track?

It will be safe. While I have switched to extended studs which makes it less of an issue, 5mm spacers are not going to affect the holding power of the lug bolts much. If you are concerned, you can buy 10 extended lug bolts to recapture what is lost.

Does your spacer have the hub centric ring? If not, you should really be careful with what kind of wheels you put on it.

How about the back of the your wheel? Is the mating surface to the hub center beveled? If it is, I would highly recommend against using any spacer that doesn't have a hub centric ring.

I was going to type this out, but found the exact words I would have used elsewhere:

Quote:
Hubcentric rims do NOT carry the weight of the car on the hole in the middle of the rim. the weight of the car is always carried by the lugs. the clamping force that the lugs exert on the wheel/hub surface is what is holding up the car. the only difference hubcentricity makes is when you torque your wheels.

with a hubcentric wheel, you could do the final tightening of your lugs after you lower the car. this is because the wheel is centered on the hub, and when you torque the lugs, you will not be offsetting the wheel.

with a non-hubcentric wheel, you need to tighten the lugs to spec when the wheel is still in the air. this is because there is always a little clearance between the studs and the stud holes, and since the rim is not hubcentric, when you lower the car, the weight of the car will cause the rim to be misaligned, and when you torque the lugs, they will hold the wheel in the misaligned position and you end up with a wheel that does not spin about its true center.
The lugs would have to fail for there to be vertical load placed on the hubcentric ring. If you torque the wheel properly, as outlined above, the conical style lugs also act to center the wheel but it takes more finesse to do it this way and would require keeping the front hubs from spinning.

I'm aware of what he was asking and have 5mm spacers which are not wide enough to affect clamping power at all to affect his safety.

Yeah -- I "simplified" things by selling my dedicated Z3 race car, and sold my DD 335i. I've had the M3 now for 2.5 years and have loved every minute of it. While I've not always driven my best, I've been in the hunt for each year when it comes to rolling into Lincoln with a 5th out of 48 in 2016, and 12th last year at Nat's.

Just a FYI, those 595s do run wide.
