Im not trying to derail the thread, looking for an answer: are UR catless downpipes not considered afforable ($549 IIRC)? I searched for complaints on quality, asked about this in the xi section of this forum, and didnt see any, didnt receive answers... so now I have them in my living room. So that leads me to assume that either I'm not finding lots of quality complaints, or the $5xx range isnt affordable. ?? But that cant be it, people who drive these cars cant find the $5xx range out of their price range if they have a 335xi, right? Stumped...

Well, yes you were trying to! A reasonable price does not equate to affordability. A few months ago $550 was a great price on 3" dps, now I wouldn't bother looking beyond the VRSF set at its price point. I can't find the extra value in AR/AA/MS comparatively.

Now if these guys could only have predicted the market demand!!

Did you not see the link in the thread on xi downpipes that showed how badly a set of UR DP's rusted? Clearly not the best research on your end....

No. "a set". I didn't see that. I paid a measly $430 for them, new, so I'm not extremely concerned if they don't sparkle in two years. I'll throw em on, and if I need to replace them I will. Lol. If that's this cars biggest issue a year or two down the road I'll be thrilled. I'll pull them off in a year or two and maybe I'll have rusty pipes to snap some pictures of and a new set from VRSF :-) now, I am trying to rerail. I'll buy these if mine rust out

One bad set? Good chance... UR does make good quality exhaust parts for other cars (Subaru, Mitsubishi etc) that don't have the same corrosion issues like in that thread. The $430 you spent might be a solid $430 .

Lol you're not getting it- it's only, just, $430. Ie if they suck and I have to replace them down the road, $430 will not keep me up at night. The research consisted of: two companies offer them, one costs half the price of the other. Phoenix doesn't see the saltiest roads either, to my knowledge they may very well have been a bad buy... I've made plenty of bad buys to worry about, $430 for DPs that have two sets of rusty pictures from customers with bad winters doesn't worry me is what I'm hoping you understand

You have serious reading comprehension issues haha. I was agreeing with you.

UR does make quality parts so it's likely this was just a bad batch.

A "solid $430" = money probably well spent. We good?

We've decided to make a set which means the production batch won't be available until at least early spring.

Why such bottleneck (3" to 2.25") taper with these pipes?
AR tapers down to 2.5" for sure. I was the 2nd person to have AR XI catless pipes on his car. (1st being the test dummy). The taper on the AR's anyways was done sooner than later because of the tight tolerances we have on the XI's. Nothing to do with bottlenecks. The I AR pipes go down to 2.5" also, but it is at the end and probably about an 1" or so IIRC.

Agreed. I don't get why people insist on wanting high flow cats in the downpipes? Is it because they don't want to deal with the CEL? Performance wise, keep the downpipes catless. If you need high flow cats put them in the mid-pipes somewhere.... Easier to replace if the cat fails. MEOW!

Good to see more competition for the XI's though. When I first bought it was either AR or UR. And UR's build quality didn't look well and IIRC JPSIMON had issues with his pipes rusting and eventually cracking

Sound. Catless drones like a bitch compared to catted.

UR is still the best option IMO. They confirmed that they've never had a part fail due to rust or corrosion. The piping is 304 stainless and the flanges are 3/8" steel. The flanges will develop surface rust over time if left alone, but a shot of POR-15 or some other rust spray would probably do the trick as preventative maintenance.

For half the price of AR for essentially the same thing (I'm okay losing 5-10WHP), I see no issues.
