DMFW status

Hi Guys,

I have a slipping clutch atm and my car has about 68000 "miles" on it. Do you reckon its okay for me to just replace the clutch and leave the stock fw?

Hit or miss. Nobody can tell you for sure.

If it ends up not working out it will cost you 2x in labor.

I'd replace it with a LUK flywheel its only another $500-600 and everything will be good for the long term.

I agree jeff. theyre about 900 aud for us landed =[ I've purchased a clutch though. My mechanic friend said that once the housing is off, he will see if we can get it machined if its not bad, otherwise i can leave the car there and get a fw in within a couple of days.

It all depends on your power goals, BMW states the DMFW is good for two clutch installs and they typically do not change them at the dealership. Do an inspection and at least take a grinding tool/sandpaper to the surface if you don't want to deal with resurfacing it. My 335is/550i clutch with all new parts within the bellhousing and reusing my DMFW which wasn't in bad shape at about 70-75k miles cost me well under 1k with parts and labor for installation. Could have done it myself, but didn't have the time and a lift to do the job.

Sometimes machining doesn't go to well as it the DMFW becomes imbalanced. The key with any DMFW is the balance issues. That's why the big HP guys go with the single mass flywheel.

If you get it machined, keep in mind it's still a risk as even though the surface is good, it may be imbalanced.

It could cause vibrations and or chronic misfires, worst case scenario.
