High mileage 335d, asking for trouble?
Currently looking to swap my R55 Mini Cooper S for a 335d. I'm only looking at spending around 5k, which will get me a high mileage 335d. There is currently one in the autotrader with 145k on the clock.
Am I asking for trouble if I do this? I had a 325d of a similar age (2008) and once it got over 100k, I had the dpf light on most the time. I sold it for an Audi S4, which has also been sold on. Would I be better to get a 330D without as many miles? Or is the 335d a pretty reliable car? It won't be used daily, as I have a Kawasaki that I commute to work on most of the week, just the odd trip to work and school runs (not interested in a 335i as that would definitely be trouble!) |

My 325D has 324k mileage and dpf /egr still work. With this one i feel pretty close to my previous 1.9 Tdi(VE). After purchase from pervious owner (he was confused why everyone were afraid of milage) It has been 2 years and i just enjoy and drive, very reliable. Logically 335D more power, more heat, more stress on cooling which i believe is this car weakness.
Just make sure you add additives because modern fuel is pretty crap quality. If the car had previously longlife oil intervals then don't buy. Also why people look at mileage? It doesn't show anything. |

My 335d is on 154k miles, no DPF issues. Gearbox has been serviced twice; once at 69k and then again at 130k miles. Will be due again at 190k miles.

Numbers make much more sense knowing that it's UK.
bluetec is actually VW and Mercedes-Benz's trademarked name for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid/Selective Catalytic Reduction, NOx reduction hardware and software. BMW refused to sign on, but they use essentially identical hardware. In fact, their DEF tank uses parts that match those on some VW cars/suvs. |

Don't do it. 150k is considered a vehicles lifetime. You'll be replacing parts for little lights more often than not.
I would suggest Put 3k of that 5 as a down towards a newer possible E92 or even F series with under 60k mileage. |

Unfortunately 5k is my max, as I've bought more cars than I'd like over the last year (and spent more than I wanted). As much as I'd like an F series, I can't justify it, as I also want to upgrade the bike this year

For 5k price it's inevitable 120k-150k miles
If you're looking for something you can always work on yourself, and the risk of breaking is down is OK, then for sure go for it My first e36 325 had 150k miles, no issues other than CEL until I wrecked 07 328 bought with 120k miles - coolant hose broke while driving, Starter was replaced, all spark plugs replaced, coil replaced, etc now washer reservoir won't hold any fluid, rear passenger window regulator is out, false CEL every two months for secondary air pump sensor - but the car itself runs amazing. I was ok with all this, I want to learn and work on as much as I can but really anything engine related I have to take to my mechanic, so far I've dropped maybe $900 on necessary repairs/maintenance when the car has broken down or refused to start |

If $5k is your budget, avoid the 335d. I'm not saying you'll have a problem. The only major issues I've had with mine (still under 100k) were covered by existing recalls and sorted out. The CUB cleaning was also done a few months before I purchased the car and I had methanol spraying within another few months.
The real issue is that if you do have a problem, it's going to cost you real money to fix it. If you can't go over $5k, I assume that's the total short-term budget for the car. |
