215/45R17 as winter setup

Is going from 225/45-17 to 215/45-17 all around on my 328xi going to do any damage to transfercase or XI system since the overall diameter is 9mm less than stock?

If it is a square setup you have no issue. The only time theres an issue is if you run staggered with more than a 1% rolling diameter difference. I run 235/35/19 in the front and 265/30/19 in the back during the summer. In a few weeks i'm switching to my winter setup which will be a square 225/45/17 setup.

so even though its a -1.4% difference, since all 4 will be the same overall circumference, it's not going to be a problem?

thats what i run in the winter, no issues. just make sure they are all the same size.

your speedo will be off by that 1.4% really minimal difference. dont worry about it.

It is the relative difference between front/back axle or side/side tire size (and it is diameter/rolling circumference not width) they are talking about with the %, not the overall difference between 4 identical stock tires and 4 of something else.

A large difference cause different rates of rotation (slip) within the drive train, and this causes problems beyond a certain point.

Go for it!

I'm actually surprised more xi/X-Drive guys don't run this size in the winter if they're running 17's.

The only percent that matters is the difference between front and rear. The difference from the OEM wheels to the new ones don't effect anything

Is 215 better than running 225's? I just ordered tireracks recommended winter wheel and tire size and it was 225/45/17...

215 is better than 225 for a winter setup since it is narrower.

+1, because from what i understand is its less tire going trough the snow so it wont compact as much forming a slippery snow sheet! i have no idea if its really that much of a difference though, who knows?

Yep, narrower tires are better at cutting through the snow opposed to smushing it down with a wider tire. Wider tires tend to perform better on ice so there is that tradeoff.

That's true but 225 are narrow enough for me. Sad to lose my nice staggered look but its only for a few months. The wheels came today and I actually can't wait to put them on.

Usually you go narrower but taller sidewall. 10mm isn't going to make much of a difference traction wise. Smitty, going to space em? Wider track is better

Whoops that's an embarrassing mistake ... Hahaha they didn't put the offsets on the invoice so I just gave you the only numbers I saw. Sad part is I knew that wasn't offset but for some reason I wrote it anyways... On another note i'm really excited to mount them and get some snow. I should have some videos of some fun in the snow with my buddies STi and B6 S4

Just bought the Pirelli Sottozero Serie II W210 Runflats. Just personal preference and price for me. Wanted the W240 for the XL and V speed rating, but opted for runflats for convenience.

Heard good reviews of both tires, so probably can't go wrong with either.
