M47 320d DPF woes

Hi guys

So the back pressure on my DPF has increased and I have started to notice that my Turbo has started to whine. Which is a sign of turbo failure

Are the two linked with each other?

Cheers

If it's an M47 and not N47 it almost definitely doesn't have a DPF.

I believe a DPF was an optional extra on M47 models. Does it show up if you type your VIN in BMWVIN.COM?

Or an easy way to find out is the exhaust. If the tip is pointing down then there is no DPF, if its straight then you a DPF.

Yeah DPF was a very costly optional extra for the M47, never heard of one actually being spec'd with it.

In UK maybe. Most in the rest of EU I've seen have them, mine included.

Yep mine has it, my car is a preproduction 320d. It has pretty much every single option Including DPF.

Going back to the back pressure and turbo issues are they both linked?

Yes, they're both linked due to exhaust gas pressures in the outflow manifold.

Back pressure also effects how the turbo spools up (ie. by providing resistance)

Ah okay thanks for clearing that up, do you know when the turbo will go bang then? Or has it just started to get noisey over time

Assuming you haven't tampered with the stock settings in the car, turbos can die from oil starvation, dirt in the oil which can damage the propellers, poor turbo design ( a la 320d in the E46 ), and age related fatigue.

As with all cars, prevention is better than cure but more so BMW's. Noisy over time would suggest a replacement. However, a good mechanic will advise you more than just replacing the turbo

I have been advised that my turbo has gotten noisy due to excessive back pressure from the DPF, The current turbo is only 10,000 miles old from BMW and was replaced when the car was under extended warrenty

Can anyone recommend a good turbo reconditioning company?
