Yeah makes good sense. I'm at 97k and commute 180 miles each way. Breaking down on the turnpike sucks.
Just ordered the water pump also. WP + thermostat about $400 from ECS. Last edited by CobraMarty; 03-03-2018 at 03:24 PM.. |

Last week mileage was again 26.24mpg.
Same as it was the week before. Checking again this trip but left at a bad time and had traffic and stop and go for about 45 minutes on the turnpike, so probably won't be a valid test. Still have the P0128 thermostat code but also picked up another new code, P1554. P1554 is intake cam sensor or Crank Position Sensor. I already replaced the intake cam sensor so my bet is it is the Crank position sensor. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back on yet. The quest continues... |

So, beating the transmission dead horse again..
If you're looking for 400 miles without filling up, you could swap it - I'm currently sitting at 220 miles with 5/8 of the tank left. That was ~3 hours total to Seattle and back, plus 45 minutes of traffic and city driving. Speeds between 65-80mph, and running the A/C on the way home so my kid didn't get car sick. The highest total range was 580 miles, which I think it could do but it would have to be all highway (it dropped to 560 miles with the A/C on after leaving Seattle). But right now I should hit 400 miles and still have 1/4 tank left. |

Yeah, bummer of the auto trans.
As long as I can make the 400 mile RT on 1 tankful and refill at home, I'm good. At least it allows me to test parts and 'theories' on increasing mileage. It's my own little bs game. If I had a manual I would probably want to make 1.5 trips per tankful. Ha. |

So I bought the new water pump and thermostat and dropped it off at the shop to do the yearly inspection and emissions and wp/t work and change the oil.
Got a call that 3 of the aluminum bolts holding the passenger motor mount bracket to the engine block had broke and the 4th was loose and bent and the engine was moving a bit. Can't use steel bolts so I ran to BMW to pick up the new pack of 4 alumn bolts, $29 later for 4 bolts. Hopefully will get it back tomorrow. And I have been chasing a clunk/noise in the front end for months. Checked it before on the lift and found nothing. Run it until it gets worse and can find it. Now it can be reproduced with just bouncing the front fenders. Tracked it down to the UUC HD front sway bar links. Oh yeah, had to buy them because the stock links will fail with the heavier sway bar. The UUC links failed. On both the bottom heim that threads into the hex shaft, pulled the threads right out. The shafts are SS and not the strongest for threads. Either the hole was drilled too big and then the threads were cut into the shaft/link or just the stainless steel is not strong enough with threads. I called UUC and they said they never had this issue before. I asked if they would warranty them and they wanted me to send them my links to let them inspect them. I then just said let me buy a new set of HD links and they told me to just weld the heims to the shaft. OK, MIG welded the heims to the shaft. On 1, the teflon internals probably got a bit too hot and leaked slightly. I am sure they won't last long but the noise is gone. I forgot how nice it is to drive with no clunking going on in the front end. When these fail, I will probably build my own set with slightly larger heims use steel shaft. Sway bar works great again. Yeah stock xi springs and stock shocks.
I am sure that the stock springs stressed them more with more movement but They do not require lowering springs to use the UUC sway bars and links. Last edited by CobraMarty; 05-04-2018 at 07:56 PM.. |

Picked up the car today.
New water pump and thermostat. Passenger side motor mount bracket had 3 of the 4 bolts broken that hold it to the engine block. The 4th was bent. Replaced all 4 with new BMW OEM aluminum bolts. They also installed the rear lower Ultra Racing suspension brace. The front lower Ultra Racing suspension brace didn't fit the xi. Probably only for the 2wd models. And Mobil 1 5-30w oil and Mann filter change. And it was quiet driving for half a day and I think that the welded front sway bar links broke again. I'll try and check them tomorrow. Maybe I can upgrade them to the next size larger heims and use steel instead of stainless steel for the rods/shafts. PITA. |

Yeah, I was told that the stock links would 'bend' with the new UUC sway bars and to get UUC upgraded links.
I might go back and just use the stock ones until they bend or weld some reinforcement to them and then re-install. |

The welded UUC links broke the weld, dissimilar material being welded. I got some stock links to try and see if they bend or break and then try and come up with a stronger solution.
3 weeks ago I had total mileage of 467 miles, highest ever and today got 483 miles. Either finally summer gas or the thermostat and getting up to proper temperature is the key. Will see what the mpg is when I get home Monday. |

This thread makes for a great read
Now adding 'thermostat and water pump' to my laundry list, as it seemed this winter it couldn't stay warm without some throttle, and the water pump is original at 155k |

Got home and filled it up. So at 70mph, no A/C got 26.56mpg.
UUC front sway bar links are clunking again. I'm sure the weld broke. Bought some stock replacement to install and see how long they last and find a solution if needed. Headlight went out. Good excuse to put in the LED bulbs in the headlights and fog lights. Next up is Bilstein B4 replacement struts and shocks, alignment and new tires. Still gotta install the sport seats and sport steering wheel with paddle shifting. Then exhaust muffler mod, mid pipe delete. Maybe winter project catted headers, 3IM and MILVS and a tune. |

So this week, I aired up the tires to 35psi, they were 28psi, and saw the highest ever total miles of 503 miles at 70mph. We'll see next week when I get home what the mileage, mpg, is.
Next trip I want to tape up the air vent holes in the aFe air box and see if they are 'venting' the 'ram air ' of the intake scoops. |

27.2mpg on this last trip.
Bought a set of new Bilstein B4 shocks and had them installed and alignment done. Fronts were completely blown, would actually sink under their own weight. Foam bump stops were also worn/compressed and were replaced. Also replaced the UUC links with Moog stock replacement. Now rides much better and quiet links. The UUC links did not break the welds but the heims were loose and I didn't notice before that the heim to mounting bolt was loose and wobbles. I might try and make a set using heim rod ends with studs already attached. |

New Bilstein shocks are great. Old ones sank to bottom out.
New stock front sway bar links are quiet and I'll see how long they last. Maybe the bad front shocks helped the UUC sway bar links strip out. IDK, time will tell. Oil change with Mobil 1 5-30 and added 1 can LiquiMoly MOS2 Anti-Friction. So new trip today and highest total mileage ever, 526 miles. 73* no a/c and windows up at cruise control 70mph. We'll see at the end of the week what the actual mileage is but this trip I am here 7 days instead of my usual 4. Maybe 20 more non-highway miles. I commute about 300 miles a week in a 2007 E90 328i. Sport and Premium Packages, manual trans. I installed eibach pro kit springs mainly to lower it a little more. I had 19" Forgestar wheels on it but put the 17" stock wheels and RFTs on after bending too many wheels on bad roads. I prefer knowing I don't have to change a tire on the side of a busy freeway in the dark and the ride is better than the 19s with non-RFT. The leather sport seats along with an M3 steering wheel make the commuting a lot more enjoyable. I even appreciate the auto dimming mirrors because I'm usually driving before dawn or after sunset. It's a great daily driver and if something happened to it, I'd get another one. BTW, I get 400 miles per tank or about 25mpg. That's driving 75-80mph.

Best mileage yet- 27.89mpg @70mph cruise control, no a/c.
Looks like the LiquiMoly MoS4 Anti-Friction added about 1mpg. Definitely smoother running engine. It's nice to make it home without the low fuel light coming on. Now to repeat it a couple of times to confirm. Going to tape up the front air inlets on the aFe air box and test that theory that they are 'venting' the ram air effect of the front grill scoops and stock inlet pathway. For this trip I duct taped the aFe air box front 'vents' closed.
So now it is really quiet compared to when the vents were open, especially when accelerating. So far total mileage max 517 miles @ 70mph 77*F (+4* compared to last week) no a/c, sun roof back lifted, back passenger window down 1", good cross breeze. I'll see in 5 days, when I return home, what the mpg really is. I wonder if 526 miles @ 73*F vs. 517 miles @ 77*F is significant? Is that loss due to 4* hotter or vents taped up? Well that was significant, blocking off the front vents of the aFe box, +0.34mpg.
Got back and had 467 total miles and 28.23mpg @70mph cruise control, no A/C. |
