Man that sucks.

At least you didn't have to pay tax on the full value of the car, like, say, you would in Texas.

So let me get this straight, MA - where the Boston Tea Party took place - is making you pay property tax on a lease? That's just too freaking stupid. Thank goodness we all have representation now.

I talked to my friend about this who is currently leasing a 335I and he told me that he just paid his property tax last month. Every year, you have to pay them.. For me, I have to pay 2 years full... this sucks.. I'm thinking of calling the fianancial group and ask if I could break this into monthly payment with my new car.

Not surprised to hear about that. That's because many Democrats live in Mass., they love to create many new taxes!!

Yes, here in MA there is such a thing as excise tax. Just be careful, the tax is sent for an entire year. If you had the car for part of the year you need to submit your registration cancellation to get a refund.

I guess I don't understand how it is 1400, the tax for 335i was ~700 for an entire year. Unless of course you owe from previous years.

Also if you itemize your deductions on the tax return be sure you deduct this tax as well.

Welcome to taxachusetts!

So do republicans. But they prefer to call it inflation.

This is one of the great things about living in the South. We do not have any stupid taxes such as property taxes on an automobile. What a rip off. Why do the voters in your state put up with such garbage. It seems that sometimes you just bend over and take it willingly. Sure, we have our rednecks and trailer trash around but I am proud to say that here in Tennessee our citizens have the lowest state per capita tax burden of any state in the nation.

I am just repeatedly amazed at some of the taxes people pay in other states especially up north and California.

yeah I think 1,400 is for whole 2 years... damn it after I checked my account statement that comes every month, on the account activity, there was property tax next to my lease payment balance..

I know you pay property tax on leases in South Carolina, I have leased BMW's for 13 years and paid property tax every year. My E93 is over $1,000 a year, sales tax is only $300 in S.C.

That is outrageous. So what your are saying is that over 4 years you would have to pay approximately $4300 in yearly property tax and inital sales tax? If so, the voters need to revolt.

Here in Tennessee, we have a fairly high sales tax but no income tax or any kind of property tax on autos. I will keep our sales tax anyday regardless of its so called regressive nature. Regressive my ass, screw the Democrats and their higher income taxes.

CT and RI also have property tax on cars, but i believe its fully deductible on the state tax return.

One note on the tax in South Carolina, the bill comes from the county and not BMW just like the tax bill on my house. Mass must have it set up to collect through BMW so do you still get to claim a tax deduction in Mass?

We used to have the ridiculous tax every year for automobiles in Washington that was a flat 2.9% of their estimation of what your vehicle was worth (which didn't even come close to real depreciation), but thank god the voters revolted a while back and voted it out. Nothing like paying close to 8% sales tax AND getting shafted every year. Of course, the government has slowly worked its way back in my charging various "fees" in addition to the normal tab renewal fee.

Okay, this is interesting.

Let's keep a running list of "screw-you-over" taxation states/counties/cities.

So far I see:
Massachusetts => property tax on cars, annual
Connecticut => property tax on cars, annual (?)
Rhode Island => property tax on cars, annual (?)
Texas => pay taxes on FULL value of car when you lease, plus...you pay taxes AGAIN when/if you buy it at lease-end

Wow, never heard of property taxes on a car. I'm glad that's one thing Cali hasn't instituted. I can see property taxes making sense if you live in your car though.
