Rear Suspension Metal Clank, Tips on Subframe, Wishbone, Toe and Trailing

Edit: Problem solved, replaced e-brake / parking brake, noise gone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I have a pretty loud metal clanking noise coming from the rear, and Im starting to replace things.

Car has 55k miles, is this a normal mileage to need replacement?

Replacing the the Wishbone, Toe and Trailing arms, upper / lower shock mounts, Stabilizer Bar Links in the future if all else fails.

I now have access to a lift and any tools, was using jack stands and floor jack before.

Can you guys help me match these arms with the respective torque specs?

Thanks appreciate any help!

18: TOE ARMS
15: GUIDE?? ARMS?
16: WISHBONE
14: TRAILING ARM??
17: CONTROL ARM
4: Torque specs?
12: Torque specs?

Am i correct?

Renewed nuts/bolts.

I suggest you find what is causing the clunk before you start replacing good parts only to find clunk persist. Those circled in red/blue rarely go bad. Usually is the other end and that bushing is on the spindle. Could be also the quide or tension rods. Or the shock or shock mounts. I doesn't matter if e90 or e92, or 328i or 3335i, they are all the same.

Two times I've had a rear clank were from the aftermarket dif brace and when one of the rear shock mounts went bad. The inset in the rubber mount failed and it was moving around. Doubt it's from anything you've circled.

Thanks, I already received a new set of Camber, Toe and Trailing arms, just going to throw them on and go from there. You got me thinking though It may be something to do with the shocks / mounts. That will probably be the next thing I replace.

No dif brace, noise comes from both sides, was it the lower mounts? http://www.strutmonkey.com/store/p34...Mount_Kit.html

The upper mounts should still be good right? No snow/salt/ 55k miles:
http://www.strutmonkey.com/store/p35...Mount_Kit.html

Thanks!

Edit: Heres what I ordered:

ACDELCO - 45F2033 - Knuckle Bushing x2 (not messing with subframe just yet)
KYB - SM5767 - Lower Shock Mount Kit x2
MOOG - K160366 - Upper Shock Mount Kit x2

Order Total $102.05

Not bad...

Yes, I was referring to the lower mounts. So it comes from both sides consistently?

If you hit a bump on the left side only you hear the clank on the left only, and right is the same as well.

The left side does seem to be worse.

Have you replaced your sway bar end links, front or back?

The rear sway bar end links look to be in pretty good shape. Most of my parts came in today, still waiting on Upper Shock Mount Kits to be delivered tomorrow.

Ready to throw this car on the lift and get wrenching either late Tomorrow or Saturday morning.

Ready to throw these in tomorrow.

Just the rear links or also the front? Did you check the shock mounts?

I see you replaced the mounts. Subframe bolts loose?

Sorry but I told you in post#2. All these parts and labor and clunk persist. When does the cluck happen? Only when you hit portholes? Have you checked the diff and half axles?

I did only the rear links, Subframe bolts were all torqued down, nothing loose. Mounts are done and torqued.

Yeah but what I took off was pretty worn already, so doesn’t really hurt considering they weren’t all that expensive.

It happens on bumpy roads, holes. Noticeably after the rear wheels roll over something.

Thanks I’ll check out the diff and axles this weekend.

Is it possible the rear e-brake could cause a rattle?

I located my clunk by putting car on ramps at rear and got under while another guy bounced rear axle for me. It was a lower attachment to shock. I have M3 lower camber arms with M3 style coil overs. I had the bolt spacers reversed on driver side. The sweetest fix is the free one. I agree with feuer that you should diagnose the problem and stop changing numerous parts.

If the rear links were shot the fronts definitely are.
