WTF - SOS Error Message

So I got my toy back from Alto's smash repairers after much agro last night.

Appears they ordered the wrong door handle (one without the comfort access) and were anal retentive about assembling the door and then reassembling once the correct part arrived from Germany if I inisted in them fitting a standard unpainted handle given it's 6 week lead time. End of the day I won the battle so appart from a black handle & no comfort access from the ds side I'm good to rock. You may know that feeling of coming home from a long trip, opening the door and just sniffing the car evoked such a response (maybe I am sick and need to visit the head dr?).

So I reinstalled my proceed (I had an issue with the green harness, broke a connector when pulling it out b4 sending the car to the repairers) and it took the Vinshu people ages to get back to me about sending a new fitting. Bugger is it arrived today, day after I dodgy'd the connection. However the install went without issue last night, no codes and took maybe 40mins from start to finish. I then went for a nice drive to Brooklyn via the old road to test it..... humm NICE is the word for it.

Anyway to the issue at hand: while driving home from the office 2nite after the ED and Harbour tunnel I got a warning light on the dash about the SOS system being RS and to call into BMW to have it checked out. I stopped off at a mates place on the way home and from there onwards the error was gone.

So my question is should I worry about this or should I go to BMW and get it checked? If the latter should I remove the proceed or just suck it and see what happens?

IMHO it appears to me to be a phone issue rather than something due to the proceed....

Anyway cannot do anymore testing 2nite as a nice bottle of red appeared when I got home.... will see what happens on the way to the office 2morrow.

BTW appologies for those that wanted to see a dyno of the car stock, addicted to the power now so I could not wait b4 reinstalling the proceed. I will however be running a cable to the glovebox on the w/e so will run a stock map @ the same place after V2 arrives.

I had an SOS error message a few months ago. Didn't happen again, but I was at the dealership a few weeks later and got them to check it, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it... but for peace of mind you may want to get it checked.

A mate of mine had the same error message, but it was due to the stupid runflats, which somehow manged to get 2 punctures in the first 1000km of driving of a brand spanking new 5er, like.... go figure!

If you've installed any aftermarket ECU or piggyback system BMW have a zero tollerance for mucking around with the DME and will no doubt regretfully but firmly withdraw their warranty (totally within reason in my view) so I'd remove anything that would give them the opportunity to if it were my car.

Sorry to hear about the drama, sounds like a headache.

Removed it b4 they collected it for repairs then reinstalled it last night when I got home. Will probably leave it in when they do the handle as there would be 0% need to open the bonnet & it's a PITA to open up all the covers. Will be trying to route the serial cable into the cabin on the w.e so as to be able to load a stock map when it does go in, wa sto dark last night to give it a go and besides I needed a proper drive after having a Hyundai for a week or so.

Can of worms really but the manufacturer needs to prove any mods done affected the systems and therefore caused a failure. For instance if you have a bush issue they could blame it on the non-standard wheels? Oil gumming up in the engine blame it on the wrong oil, rust issue blame it on the non-standard spoiler.... There are lots of variables and it is difficult to prove one way or the other, end of the day if you mod your car then you take the risk.

That said I agree that removing said mod so as to reduce the chance of them catching you is while not strictly ethical is a sound choice

No real drama regarding the SOS message, just a PITA if it occurs again, I think however it was probably something to do with a network outage (assuming that the SOS system runs on the GSM network) but will not be able to confirm this unless the problem code is still there in the morning or in the future if it comes onto the dash again.

Regards,

S

I’d leave it and wait and see. If anything, I’d give the dealer a call and ask to speak to a master techo.

i was thinking i shold remove the intake, so that they have absoloutely nothing that they can grmble about (as they don't seem to care abot the cosmetic mods such as my wheels etc)

I'm not sure what everyone worries about with mods - maybe proceed is a no no but in reality - how many warranty issues of a mechanical nature has anyone had to claim. This is my third BMW - the only warranty claim I've had was a broken interior light in my X5 (oh and my stuck roof on the e93 and we know how that ended or will end when they fix it)

Would be interested to know what warranty claims any of you have had with your BMW.

Had both rear tail lights replaced as they were cracked, apart from that nil as yet (but she is only 3mths old).

My last car had a few (Subie) and the dealer was very good about things that may or may not have been boarder line. End of the day a lot depends on your relationship with them.

well i am ABOUT to have a warranty issue adressed... i have a broken air con vent (cos i never use the aircon (cos the roof is always dropped), so i only just found out about it)...

i worry about the warranty issues, cos my service gy nearly had a fit when he found out what sized wheels i had put on, let alone the suspension... might be going to a different dealer soon...

Do what Daninsyd does and take it to a (non dealer) specialist for servicing. Better than a 16 year old apprentice working on your car. Visit the stealership only when you need broken plastic bits replaced under warranty.

Capt'n - If you open the boot on the sedan there is a thin plastic piece that runs inside the tailgate, the plastic is moulded around the edge. Both of these had cracked/broken when I collected the car.

Astra - all you need to say to the dealer is please prove that my wheels affected the a/c. Now if you had issues with say steering or suspension bushes then they could claim the wheels caused it but the a/c - no way in a month of Sundays. Likewise they may try and pin rattles on the suspension alts.

Agree with what you've said, although the E46's are notorious for rear subframe failures on cars that are stock let alone modified with aftermarket suspension and coilovers and larger wheels in which it also occours. I would imagine you'd have a hard time getting BMW to cover it if it happened with aftermarket bits on the car as they aren't included in the design process.

But for the AC or interior rattles etc no deal, makes no difference what suspension setup or wheels are on the car, it's still covered.

As far as warranty issues, the S54B32 engines are notorious for engine failures due to a process in the manufacturing of the connecting rod bearings. My car popped the engine within the first 1200km origionally. It's had the coils replaced when one of them failed then had the entire lot replaced for the later Bosch ones, thats not to mention the subframe problem which I had reinforced by a specalist as BMW's fix it just a replace job.

Interesting, I just had the SOS error come up for the first time today. It seems to be an intermittent problem. I do not have any after-market items installed, so it is definitely not related to the Procede....

no, the wheels don't have anything to do with it... it is the switch on the aircon vent that changes the air flow direction... it is practically hanging by a thread, and i just came to my car one day, and it was broken, so nfi how it happened
