N51 Rough idle, whine. 2011 328i

Hi!
I posted before about a rough idle and whine and the problem went away on its own. But, the problem has now returned and I finally have a fault code.

I got a 002A82 error code for the intake vanos which would suggest a VANOS solenoid, but I read a forum where it was actually the PCV valve causing the code.

So, when this happened again I did the oil filler cap test, and there was some pressure but I didn’t have to pull too hard to get the cap off, but the whine did change when I took it off.

I’m hoping for it not to be the PCV as I do not want to change the valve cover, so I wanted to hear what other people thought before attempting to tackle such a job.

Here’s a video of what my car is doing:

Check with your dealer and see if they will cover it under the SULEV warranty.

Guess I should mention, the vehicle is registered in Ohio, so unfortunately dealer won’t honor SULEV warranty.

Did you try to clean your VANOS solenoids and your check valves? Both are common places to look and not terribly difficult to access: solenoids you can check and clean in 15 minutes at the front of your engine bay. Check valves will take a little more effort with either a blind torx access (its under the ledge of the valve cover) or accessing through the wheel well.

From your video I can hear a whistling noise that could be a bad PCV valve. Does this noise go away when the engine is running with the oil cap open? If it does go away with it opened, I'd guess it's a broken PCV valve.

It doesn’t go away, but it definitely is a quieter. That’s why I wasn’t sure whether it’s actually the PCV valve or not.

Haven’t cleaned either yet but planned on cleaning the solenoids as soon as I have time. Fingers crossed it’s the solenoids and not the PCV valve, but one of the two seem to be the likely culprit

Since you only have a fault on one of the two solenoids (one for intake and one for exhaust VANOS units), you could try cleaning and swapping them to see if the fault transfers to the exhaust side. If it does, that solenoid is probably bad (maybe even the other one too; at 130k both could be needing replacement).

Apparently bad VANOS solenoids cause a whistle too: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/w...g-idle.825666/

UPDATE: switched intake with exhaust VANOS and code became an exhaust VANOS code, so ordered a solenoid and will update with result when they arrive!

I think you can pull some strings or call BMW NA and have them maybe push to get you covered by the warranty. I know people here in Florida have had cars fixed by the dealer with sulev warranty and there's no inspections or anything here

Did you verify this by contacting the dealer?

Switched VANOS intake and it fixed it for a day but then same code and problem came back. Checked oil filter cap, cage was missing Ordered new cage and replaced it, and so far sound hasn't came back and the idle is less rough but going from 1st to 2nd my car sounds like a supra l not sure that's supposed to happen but until I have another issue I'm not gonna worry

If this is coming from under the hood it definitely sounds like the CCV. We have exact model and motor. Had to replace.
